Sunday Night Update May 5

GOOD EVENING Deb Legault here with quite a lengthy but informative Sunday Night Update from General Lake Public School.  This week we celebrate Education Week in Ontario. The theme for the week is  "moving from great to excellent in education"and General Lake is partnering up with the Phoenix centre and the Renfrew County Public health unit to move to excellence by creating awareness for mental health issues.
General Lake will be focusing on creating a positive sense of being through bucket filling activities.  Based on the book called "Have you filled my bucket?, students will be encouraged to nominate people who have 'filled their imaginary buckets' through thoughtful words and deeds. Forms will be available in the office or from classroom teachers.  Bucket fillers will be displayed prominently on our front bulletin board and names will be read daily.
Our Scholastic Book Fair kicks off this week with new and exciting books.  Students will have a chance to visit the fair on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with their classes to create wish lists.  The Fair is open from 9:00 until 4:00 daily.  Unfortunately we will only be accepting cash or credit card for this event. Please contact the school if you are available to volunteer for this event as we still need volunteers for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
On Monday we recognize Music Monday by playing the song 'Is Somebody Singing' (ISS) written and recorded by astronaut Chris Hatfield and Barenaked ladies artist Ed Robertson. Music Monday is an annual event that brings together thousands of students, musicians, parents and community members across the country to celebrate the gift of music in our lives.
On Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning our grade 7-8 softball teams will meet at 8:00am for our early morning practice. Students, don't forget to get those student in Good Standing Forms signed and returned.
On Tuesday morning at 8:15 our Grade 7 badminton team meets for their last practice before the tournament.
On Tuesday evening, back by popular demand. Mr Lubiniv from the Phoenix centre joins us for a free informative workshop entitled Temperament & Goodness of Fit.  The evening begins at 6:00 until 7:30 and our Book fair will also be open at this time.
On Wednesday, May 8 our Grade 7 Badminton team is at Fellowes High School for a tournament.
On Friday May 10 General Lake will participate in an exciting event called the 'Destination Imagination Mini Olympics'. Students will be assembled in teams and participate in timed problem solving challenges designed to be fun and interactive. We will also be serving our hot lunch pizza.
Congratulations to our top sellers for the Vesey Bulb Fundraiser.  Joslyn Exham came in first place selling $183.00.  Kalee Granter came in second selling $166.00, followed closely by Liam Tobin with a whopping $161.00.  These students received a voucher for our up and coming book fair compliments of the General Lake School Council.
Finally with the hot weather a reminder for Junior Intermediate students that we do have a dress code. Shorts need to cover approximately to the tips of fingers when arms held at sides and tops need to have straps approximately 3 fingers wide and not be low cut and cover the midriff.  Thanks parents for your help monitoring and reinforcing.
Thanks everyone and it sounds like another exciting week at General Lake.
