General Lake Attends National We Day April 29th

Twelve General Lake students were invited to We Day held Monday, April 29 at the Robert Guertin Centre in Gatineau, Que. You can't by a ticket to this event, you have to earn one by doing good in your community and globally (www.weday.com and www.freethechildren.com). It was the 25th We Day event and the first one to be held in the Ottawa area. It was filled with many inspirational speakers and performers.  MuchMusic VJ Jesse Giddings was the MC. Actor and America's Favourite President Martin Sheen speaks of why he is an activist.  Free the Children and We Day founders Marc and Craig Kielburger get the audience of around five thousand students and educators fired up about doing good in their community and globally. Spencer West and Molly Burke tells their stories of overcoming adversity.  Performers Shawn Desmond, Neverest, My Name is Kay, Kardinal Offishall, Circue du Soleil, Karl Wolf  and Tyler Shaw keep the audience entertained while the cast of Degrassi shared their inspirational experiences from their humanitarian trip to Africa.  Altogether a most inspiring and motivational day for all the students.

Book Fair Volunteers Needed!

Dear Parents,

Our Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving soon, and we’re excited about sharing the joy of books with our students. We invite you to participate in the Spring Book Fair, from May 6th to May 10th 9:20am -4:00pm, by volunteering.

Our Scholastic Book Fair gives our school the opportunity to bring families, teachers, students, and books together.  It’s the ultimate book event!  Additionally, a portion of the sales benefits our school.  It’s the best way to raise funds while encouraging kids to read.

Being a part of the Book Fair is easier than you think.  We need people in a variety of areas, including:

·         Setting up and decorating the Book Fair and table displays (3 volunteers needed)
·         Working at our Cashier Table (8 volunteers needed)
·         Helping students and shoppers find books (16 volunteers needed)

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about our Scholastic Book Fair, please return the bottom portion of this letter.

Sincerely,

Important Information Monday, April 22

Good Evening. Important information from General Lake Public School

On Wednesday, April 24th and Thursday, April 25th you will not be able to travel completely around Borden Ave due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment assisting in the construction of new residences. Please see our school blog for more information regarding this road closure.
Also to improve safety within our school a new buzz in alarm system has been installed in the front door. All doors will continue to be locked and visitors will now have to ring a bell to gain entrance to our school.  The bell is located to the right of the door. Thank you for your patience as we implement this new safety security system.

BORDEN AVE CLOSURE APRIL 24TH AND 25TH

Re: Borden Ave closure April 24th and 25th

The route the buses will be taking to drop off and pick up students is as follows:

Buses are to turn onto Borden Ave off of Dundonald Dr, once the buses are traveling on Borden Ave they will proceed to the entrance of the first parking lot on the left hand side after the school marked 1820-1834 Borden Ave where there will be a flagman provided by the construction company to help assist the drivers to back into the entrance to turn around for both the morning and afternoon runs. They will then turn right onto Borden and proceed to the Lay-By to drop off and pick-up students.  We will notify the bus company of these changes but share this with you if you have any concerns or comments.

We ask that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic.  We also ask that you advise parents and guardians that there may be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.

Our recommendations for walkers/ cyclists are as follows:

  • Students that are approaching on Borden Ave coming from the direction of Wolfe Ave should be       advised that they are to use the entrance into the school yard at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.
  • Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from Dundonald Dr are to continue as they normally would but are to be advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days as the buses will be using this portion of Borden Ave to go to and from General Lake P.S.

If you could please, inform the students and/or guardians that on April 24th and 25th they will not be able to travel completely around Borden Ave due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment assisting in the construction of new residences.

The construction of the new residences on Borden Ave is an ongoing project, so please expect changes to be implemented again in the near future. Please note that the next phase of construction will be in a different location on Borden Ave and a revised detour schedule will be forwarded at that time. If you have any questions or recommendations please do not hesitate to contact us.

This experience was brought to the school as part of the school's We Day promise to promote awareness of Aboriginal issues through the 'We Stand Together' initiative. Special thanks to the General Lake School Council and the support of the General Lake Community for bringing this opportunity.

SCIENCE FAIR

Our annual Grade 6- 8 Science Fair was held on March 26th.  We had four judges on hand from AECL who were very impressed by the initiative that was demonstrated by students who presented projects this year.  Jada McInnis and Emma Campbell received honourable mention for their great work!  The top projects for our grade 6 to 8 students were:  Abby Jupp with the Egg Experiment; Remi Lavoie with Allergies and Jaden Prigione and Colby Gillard with Electricity.  Thank you to all of our participants and congratulations to all the winners!!  General Lake Science Fair winners are invited to participate in the Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair, April 6th at the Civic Center.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT

Breakfast is often called “the most important meal of the day” for good reason! A morning meal helps refuel the body after sleep and contributes essential nutrients important for children’s healthy growth and development.  Eating a nutritious breakfast helps children pay full attention and learn well at school and can help promote a healthy body weight.
  • Have a balanced breakfast everyday.
  • Choose foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups in Canada’s Food Guide for a nutritious breakfast; such as a bowl of cereal with fruit and milk or whole grain bagel with peanut butter or cheese and fruit juice.
  • Plan ahead by setting the table the night before and wake up a little earlier if you find you run out of time for breakfast in the morning.

Summer Booster Program 2013

The Booster Program is an educational half-day program held during the month of July for students in grade 1 and 2 who need some extra assistance in developing reading, language or math skills.

Your child’s teacher may recommend that this program would benefit your child.  Registration forms are due to your child’s teacher by April 23th.

The Scholasic Book Fair

We invite your entire family to come and see the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Book Fair, at least $6 in product goes directly back to our school? Your support of this event is key to our obtaining new resources for our library and school.

When :  Monday to Friday May 6-10, 2013
