Good evening Deb Legault here with your Sunday Night Synervoice.

Its a short week with Good Friday and Easter around the corner, I would like to remind parents to be extra careful sending in treats to the school. For the safety of all students we need to ensure that all food is peanut free. Please read label’s carefully before sending into the classes.

On Thursday, April 5 we will be having a crazy hat spirit day. Students are encouraged to don their favourite, silliest, most unusual bonnet.

Finally, on behalf of the School Council I would like to thank everyone for their participation in our Spring Fundraiser. We will announce the exact amount raised shortly.

Please mark you calendar as our next French Club will be held on April 13.

and our next School Council meeting is April 10.

Change for Change! A Big Success!

A big THANK YOU to General Lake Public School for collecting 3135 pennies and some bills and other loose change for the Child Poverty Action Network. In total we collected one hundred dollars. This initiative was introduced by our own grade 3 student, Lauralei Belanger. Lauralei made posters and daily announcements asking the students to join with her in collecting pennies for CPAN, as well as canned tabs for the Pembroke Hospital's wheelchair effort. She created the slogan give change for change. With some help from her mother, Leslie, she counted the proceeds and brought them to their respective agencies. Congratulations Lauralei for showing such pride and initiative in the school. Thanks again to the General Lake Community for pitching in to help. Together we are the Change!

GENERAL LAKE CELEBRATES EARTH HOUR

ON MARCH 29TH, students and staff will turn off the lights at General Lake Public school in recognition of Earth Hour. Earth Hour is organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. It showed that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to change the world we live in.

In 2008, the plan was to spread Earth Hour to the rest of Australia but there was an appetite to expand the movement beyond that country’s borders. Canada’s own City of Toronto was the first to sign up and it wasn’t long before 35 countries and almost 400 cities and towns followed suit. It said something compelling to the world: that the climate challenges facing our planet are so significant that change needs to be global.

With the invitation to ‘switch off’ extended to everyone, WWF’s Earth Hour quickly became an annual global event. It’s scheduled on the last Saturday of every March – closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most cities are in darkness as it rolls out around the Earth.

This year Earth hour occurs on Saturday, March 31 at 8:30 pm.

CHANGE IN SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING DATES

Please take note that there has been some changes to our April, May, and June School Council Meeting dates. We will now be meeting on the Tuesday at 6:00 pm on April 10, May 8, and June 5. Hope to see everyone out for the evening. As always, children welcome.

General Lake Celebrates La Semaine de la Francophonie

From March 5 through to March 9, 2012, General Lake Public School held its first annual Celebration of La Semaine de la Francophonie. This celebration aims to underline the value and the importance of the French language both in Canada and in the world. During the Opening ceremonies, students in the Junior-Intermediate French Immersion classes performed music and dance from Guinea, Tunisia and New Brunswick’s Acadian Culture in front of students, staff and parents. Throughout the week, the school celebrated countries like France, Vietnam, Switzerland, Eqypt, Senegal and Canada through performances, workshops and a cultural fair. On Thursday, students, staff and parents were entertained by the musical antics of folk singers 'La Ridaine'. Students were given the opportunity to experience traditional French Canadian music, as well as try out a variety of instruments including the button accordian, fiddle, harmonica, spoons, drums and bonhomme-gui-gigue. Thanks to MASC, as well as the Parent Council for supporting this performance in our school. Special thanks to Mme Nadia Haddad (Grade 7/8 French immersion teacher) and Mme Aimee De Abreu (Grade 4/5 French Immersion) for leading this wonderful project.

On February 29, 2012 General Lake Public School marked Pink Shirt Day by taking a stand to end bullying in their school. Pink Shirt day was originally started in Nova Scotia when a couple of students took it upon themselves to organize the first pink shirt day in response to witnessing a student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Students at General Lake wore their pink shirts to raise awareness of this day. Students also raised their right hand and repeated their pledge to end bullying in their school.
