Wear blue and a bandaid on Friday, April 20

Freedom from thirst, freedom from poverty, freedom from exploitation, freedom from disease, free to act!!
Every child has the right live a life free from these injustices, no matter who they are or where they come from. This is the dream that has fuelled 'Free The Children' for 15 years and counting. These four freedoms are the inspiration for their work and they are the basis for change.
But poverty, exploitation, disease and thirst cannot be ended by any one person. Change comes when young people stand up together to defy the notion that they cannot make a difference.
Mme Haddad's Grade 7/8 class has come together this week to help promote awareness for the injustices that take away the rights of children.  Students have made announcements, challenges and posters.  Students also challenged all of General Lake to participate in the action on Friday April 20 by wearing blue to promote awareness of the freedom from thirst and wearing a band-aid to promote awareness of the freedom from disease.
The students have planned other actions to take place in the following weeks.  Students can listen for announcements about how they can take part in this action.
General Lake students are definitely making a change!!

Hooray for Volunteers

Canadians have a rich history of volunteering and community involvement. With 12.5 million of them dedicating their time across Canada, volunteers are leading positive change on all fronts. The work of volunteers is essential to maintaining resilient communities at home and around the world. The work of volunteers is especially appreciated in our schools.

On April 27 General Lake Public School will be inviting all of our volunteers to join us for a light luncheon at 12:00 followed by our monthly character assembly at 1:00 pm. At this assembly, students and staff will honour our volunteers through a variety of performances including Mrs. Yakabuskie's Mini musical and Ms Priebe's Sign Language club.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event to show their support of our school, the students and the many volunteers that continue to make our school great.

EARTH WEEK AT GENERAL LAKE

April 22 is Earth day and to show our concern for the environment General Lake is planning a week filled with activities beginning Monday, April 23. Throughout the week students will be involved in a number of events to bring awareness to the environment and ways students can 'Act for the Planet' and help make our environment healthier.

Monday April 23 Pledge for the Planet
Step 1 On Monday students will be involved in making a pledge for the Planet. Students will

start with the sentence: “This week, I am Acting for the Planet! by _________________My pledge will help the environment because.... .

For example, “This April, I am Acting for the Planet! by walking to school. My pledge will help the environment because I will reduce greenhouse gases and prevent pollution by not driving or riding in a car.”

Step 2: Get the details: Write more details about your pledge:

1. How long you will pledge for: I will walk to school twice a week for the whole month.

2. Who else you will do this pledge with: I will walk to school with my Act for the Planet team

of friends.

3. Why this action is important to you: Driving cars uses non-renewable resources and

causes air pollution, plus walking is healthier and more fun.

4. Why this action is important for the planet and people: Greenhouse gases cause climate change and this hurts all living things on the planet.

5. What will help you be successful: I will get my parent/guardian to help and ask a friend or two to join me.

Step 3: Make it public. Complete the details of your pledge and put it on a poster or paper and decorate it! Pledges will be displayed in the front foyer. If you see it everyday, it will help you remember to keep doing your action!

Step 4: Record it and share! You can take it a step further by registering your pledge at http://www.ecokids.ca Tell them or show them what you are doing. Take pictures or videotape explaining why it is important. Send them your pledge and they'll share it online so other can learn from your Act for the Planet! After your pledge is over, try to do more of that activity as often as you can.

Tuesday April 24 Students can submit entries for our Recycled Creation Contest: Students can create their own original item/work of art made completely out of recycled materials. Students can work alone, as a group or as a class to submit an original creation. Creations will be on display on the gym stage. Creations due April 24th. Prizes will be awarded.

Wednesday/Thursday April 25/26: Yard Clean up/ Visitations to Recycled Creation Display in gym

Thursday April 26 Litter-less Lunch: Students are encouraged to bring in their lunch in reusable containers. Grade 7/8 students will monitor the waste and report on our litter-less lunch leaders.

Friday April 27 Wear Blue and Green Students are encouraged to wear Green and Blue to show their school spirit as well as their support for the earthweek. Character assembly 1:00 -2:00
