Message: Thursday, December 20, 2012

Good evening,
Deb Legault here with a special message from General Lake.  In the event that buses are cancelled tomorrow, the pita lunch will be postponed until the new year.  Please ensure you have checked the bus status in the morning and you have packed a lunch if the buses are cancelled.
Also we will not have anymore milk for purchase at this time.  Milk tickets and preorders will be honoured in the New Year.
Finally we here at General Lake would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday.  We hope you spend your time surrounded by loved ones and enjoy each and every moment.  In the words of Mother Theresa, "Let us always meet each other with smile, for smile is the beginning of love."

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Good evening,
Deb Legault here with your Sunday Night update for General Lake Public School.
First of all thanks to everyone for their tremendous support for our holiday concert.  The classes certainly delighted all with their performances.
Our lost and found will be bundled up this Friday to be delivered to the needy.  Please make sure to have one more look at the many items on display in the front entrance to make sure they do not belong to your child.
A reminder that all visitors must enter the school at the front entrance and sign in at the office.  All of our students have been instructed not to open doors, even if the person is known to them.  At this time I am sure everyone will realize the importance of keeping the doors locked to ensure that we all feel safe in the school.
With all the celebrations going on this week, please ensure that all items are peanut free coming into the school.
They have broken ground with the new Petawawa school and the Board is asking our help in naming the school and selecting the school colours.  If you have any ideas, be sure to visit the Board website or our blog for more information.
The school Council has created a new blog.  You can access the site at  http://generallakeschoolcouncil.blogspot.ca/
Finally this week Borden Ave will be closed once again on Dec 18th for construction.
As for the events this week on
Tuesday, Dec 18 it is our red and green spirit day, as well as a holiday sing along in the gym at 2:45.  We will also be holding draws for prizes.
On Wednesday, Dec 19 it is pyjama day as well as another sing along at 2:45.
On Thursday at 1:00 we will hold our character assembly to recognize those students who have demonstrated both initiative and cooperation throughout November and December.
Our last day of classes before the holiday is on Friday Dec 21. We will be holding our pita lunch on this day.
We will then return on January 7, 2013.
At this time I would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy holiday.  It is truly a pleasure working at General Lake with our General Lake families and I look forward to continue our great work in the New Year.  Have a great evening.

The RCDSB looks for input on name and colours for new Petawawa school

The RCDSB looks for input on name and colours for new Petawawa school
12132012_90530_0.jpgHave your say in naming Renfrew County’s newest school.
The Renfrew County District School Board wants to hear from you. The RCDSB is currently building a new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in Petawawa.
This incredible project is providing a rare opportunity to name a school and choose the school’s colours. The RCDSB is calling on the community, staff, students, employees and alumni to provide suggestions about a name and colours.
Please take a short survey www.surveymonkey.com/s/petschool and share your preference for a school name, its colours and please provide a rationale no more than one page in length. Submissions must reflect the RCDSB mission, vision and values (www.renfrew.edu.on.ca/schoolname). Paper copies of the survey are available at RCDSB schools, Petawawa Town Hall and the Petawawa Library. The survey is available in both English and French.
An Advisory committee will review the submissions, shortlist three names and submit a recommendation to trustees with their rationale. The Board of Trustees will select one name from the shortlist.
“This school will be an innovative community that promotes creativity and excellence across a wide learning spectrum,” Director of Education Roger Clarke said.
“Our commitment to students that includes strong character education programs and exceptional learning experiences energizes this process of choosing a name.”

Excellence in Teaching and Learning

General Lake Public School students can be very proud of their effort in the first leg of their educational journey for the academic year 2012-13 Parent-Teacher interviews occurred on Friday, November 16. We would like to thank you for taking the time to meet with your child’s teacher. Progress reports went home on Friday November 13th. It would be greatly appreciated if you would return the bottom portion of the second page of the report card as soon as possible. This portion will be stapled to a duplicate copy of the progress report and placed in your child’s Ontario Student Record file.

Safe, Respectful, Responsible and Caring Environment

Just a reminder, as we have many celebrations in our school at this time of the year, that we are a peanut reduced facility.  Please inspect all items coming into the school to ensure they are peanut-free.

WE Day Montreal
Students attended WE Day in Montreal on Nov 20, 2012. Students were inspired and entertained by Shawn Desman, Spencer West, Liz Murray, Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire, Waneek Horn Miller, Craig and Marc Keilburger and many more. General Lake students who attended this event were Wyatt Shamess, MacKenzie Holt, Braeden Leer, Conner Chalmers-Wein, Liam Jobe, Gabrielle McKenna, Fiona MacPherson, Leslie Wilkinson, Kendra Curtis, Skylar Reed and Stacy Rannou, Kimberley Jones and Kaitlyn Hambleton. General Lake is hoping to earn tickets to the National WE Day in Ottawa this Spring.  We are the change!

Our Habit of Mind for December is
Cooperation

“WE Day”    Waneek Horn Miller
 Speaks to Our School

Students in Grades 5-8 from General Lake Public School welcomed ‘WE Day’ speaker Waneek Horn Miller to our school on November 29, 2012 to speak about indigenous peoples and the Free The Children ‘We Stand Together’ Initiative beginning in March. The initiative is designed to bring awareness to the First Nations People.  Waneek, who is a member of the Kahnawake Mohawk tribe, is an Olympic athlete and a regular speaker at Free the Children’s  WE Day.  “WE Day” is a day long motivational event complete with celebrities  and guest speakers designed to encourage youth to become involved in both local and global issues.  Students must earn their ticket to “WE Day” by taking action both locally and globally.  General Lake has been fortunate to receive tickets to both the Toronto 2011 “WE Day” and Montreal 2012 WE Day by participating in many anti-bullying initiatives; the ‘We Scare Hunger’ food drive; and the ‘Vow of Silence’ initiative designed to promote awareness for children’s rights. General Lake is planning to participate in a penny drive for water as well as the ‘We Stand Together’ initiative in the new year.

Cans For Cancer
General Lake Public School is very proud of Grade 5 student, Maya Lavoie.  She has been collecting cans and canned tabs to help support cancer research.  She was moved to begin this initiative when her very own cousin was diagnosed with cancer last year.  Special thanks to our General Lake community for assisting Maya in this venture.  Special thanks to Jessica Parsons for all her help with this initiative.

A Wise Use Of  Resources

Operation Snowsuit
THANK YOU for your contribution to Operation Snowsuit.  It was a great success again this year. We have left the box out in the lobby, in the event that you still find snowsuits that you wish to donate. We will gladly find them a home.

FOOD DRIVE UPDATE: We Scare Hunger
Thanks to your generous support, our school donated 400 food items to the St. Joseph Food Bank during our ‘We Scare Hunger’ Food Drive.  This will go a long way in serving families in need in our community and was received with great appreciation by the volunteer staff at the food bank.

Scholastic Book fair: A Record-Breaking Book Fair!!
Thank you everyone for coming to our book fair.  We made almost $6000.00 in total sales, which means that your support has helped our school raised over $3300 worth of books for our classrooms and library!  A Special Thank You to our Parent Volunteers, whose hard work and dedication made the book fair possible:  Adele Bemister, Angela MacKay, Jennifer Gerroir, Claudia Major, Lindsay Allan, Sarah Perras, Molly Dempsey, and Karen White. Congratulations to Madison Granter who was the winner of our door prize of $25.00 in books for her class and $25.00 in books for her family.
General Lake Remembers
On November 9, staff, students and parents gathered in the gymnasium to remember those who have fallen for our freedom and who currently serve for our country so we as a nation can continue to live in peace.  The service set a solemn message as students acknowledged the importance of this day.  Students from each division participated starting with Mme Catherine’s class who performed “Why We Wear a Poppy”.  Chloe, Dominic, Paige and Alyssa from Mrs. Ferguson’s class read various Remembrance Day passages with messages of peace and loss.  Abby and Remi from Ms. Hansen and Ms. D’Abreu’s class shared the symbolic importance of the poppy with their reading “The Story of the Poppy”.  Each class then laid wreaths created earlier in the week as a slideshow of all the collected Legion posters were displayed.   Attendees then had the opportunity to listen to Master Corporal Hingley, an active member of the Canadian Military, who shared a message of peace, freedom and hope.  Mrs. Langille’s class then did a memorable rendition of “Land of the Silver Birch” commemorating the World War II efforts.  Mrs. Slepica-Stewart’s class confidently performed “The Poppy Song” followed by Mrs. Norman’s class’ global message, “Let There Be Peace on Earth”.  Mme. Lacelle and Mrs. Legault ended the performances by leading all in the Peace Pledge.  The ceremony concluded with the Last Post, 2 minutes of silence and reveille.  All students, primary to intermediate, then left in silence showing they understood the importance of participating and attending this ceremony.  Thank you to all who attended and joined us for this memorable day.  A special thanks to Master Corporal Hingley and our masters of ceremony, Erin Stacey, Kale Robbins and Kamrie Lavoie and ushers Tyler Tremblay and Connor Chalmers-Wein and our computer technician Dominic Plamondon.

We have a table set up in the front entrance with all the clothes and shoes that were misplaced by our students. When you come to visit our school, please take a few minutes to look through and see if you can identify your child’s clothing. If not claimed by December 21st, clothes will be donated to a local charity.  Please help us keep our Lost and Found bins empty by labelling your child’s clothing.

Volleyball Club:  A Huge Success
For November and December, General Lake students in Grade 6-8 have been fortunate enough to participate in a Volleyball club every Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  The focus of the Club has been to develop the children’s skills as well as to promote healthy active living.  Special thanks to our coach, Mrs Crouzat, for volunteering her time to provide such a valuable experience for our students.  Congratulations to all the students for their participation.

Tips For Parents From Your General Lake School Council

Parent involvement in school activities
Whether it is attending a school concert, cheering on a school team, or participating in community events and meetings planned by your school council, parent involvement in school activities can foster a sense of community within the school. It can build stronger relationships between teachers and parents, and provide an opportunity for parent to connect with and support each other. School-based activities may not have a direct impact on student achievement, but they can be a fun and engaging way to build a stronger school community. When you can, take advantage of the opportunity to participate in school events to show your support for your children’s school. The four key things that parents can do to help ensure their children’s success are outlined here: 1. Have high expectations for your children. Let your children know that you think it is important that they do well in school. High parental expectations have the greatest impact on student achievement. When parents consistently express belief in their children’s potential and tell their kids that they expect them to succeed academically, students do better. 2. Talk about school. Talk with your children about what’s happening at school – activities, programs and what they are learning. Surprisingly, this has a greater impact on academic achievement than monitoring homework, being at home after school for your kids, or limiting the time they are allowed to watch TV or go out during the week. According to our kids, we may not be doing such a great job in this area. In student surveys conducted by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), less than half of students in grade 3 (46%) report they talk to a parent or guardian ‘’every day or almost every day’’ about their school activities. By grade 6, that percentage drops to 38%.
3. Help your children develop a positive attitude toward learning and good work habits. Some research shows that the greatest influence you can have on your kids’ chances for success in school lie in how you influence their attitudes, their sense of personal competence, and their work habits, including persistence, seeking help, and planning. So rather than trying to directly ‘’teach’’ your children, focus on helping them handle distractions and crises of confidence, praise them for effort and persistence and
demonstrate a positive attitude about school as a whole. Bit by bit, there are the attributes that will build solid foundation for ongoing success.
4. Read together (in any language) Reading is one of the foundations of all education, and you can make a big difference by reading and talking about books and stories with your children. Reading with children is the best way to turn them on to reading. But this doesn’t mean that you should be forcing them to sound out the words. Instead of focussing on teaching your children the mechanics of reading, teach them to love reading. Make reading fun and enjoyable! The evidence is clear. Parents make a difference. And the way they contribute most to their children’s education is through what they do at home. Being a parent can be challenging, but the good news is that you don’t have to be ‘volunteer of the year’ or an expert in History to help your child succeed at school. PMFRC Offer Boys and Girls Circles

Beginning in January, the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre will be holding two different programs, one for boys and one for girls. These programs are part of the One Circle Foundation, whose mission is as follows: "One Circle Foundation promotes resiliency in children and youth, families, adults, and communities by offering circle program models that create, restore, and sustain healthy relationships. One Circle Foundation recognizes that healthy relationships are the core element to a healthy individual, family, society, and world."
Firstly, Boys Council is a model of structured, gender relevant support groups for boys from 10-12 years. Each week, a group of six to ten boys meet with two or three facilitators for two hours. This program gives boys an opportunity to express ideas and emotions in a safe place, and will work to strengthen their inherent preference to live according to good and diverse pro-social values. This program will run every Thursday, including Thursday January 17th, 24th, 31st, February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, March 7th, 21st, 28th and April 4th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
Secondly, Girls Circle will present A Day of Antibullying. As we know, bullying continues to be an issue in schools, playgrounds, and on the internet. This is a full day workshop that will focus on the bully, the victim, and the bystander. Information will be given on how to successfully stop bullying, and how and when to correctly report a bullying incident. There will also be a focus on cyber bullying, and we will take a look at current events relevant to the topic. The girls will participate in engaging games and activities to increase awareness on the topic of bullying. This is open to girls aged 10-12. It takes place on January 26th from 9:30am – 3:30pm.
Both programs are free and occur at the South Side Community Centre at 1578 Wolfe Ave. Petawawa.

Dec 9 Sunday Night Message

Deb Legault here with your Sunday night message. Another exciting week at General Lake as we get ready for the holidays.  Our holiday concert is this Friday at 12:05 in the gym.  Many classes have been preparing an exciting program for your entertainment.  We hope to see all of our families out for this exciting event.

On Monday at 3:40 we will be clearing the stage of furniture in preparation for our concert.  If anyone is available to stay for a few minutes we could use some extra strong hands to move tables and chairs.'

On Tuesday and Thursday it is the last days of our volleyball club.  A big thank you to Mrs Crouzat for volunteering her time to coach the grade 6-8 students.

On Wednesday we have our School Council Meeting at 6:00pm in the school library.  All are welcome to attend.  The agenda has been posted on the school blog at www.generallakenews.blogspot.com.

On Friday we have our pizza lunch, as well as our concert.

The following week we have an exciting week filled with fun holiday events and spirit days.  You can preview these on the blog or I will let you know on next weeks message.

Our arts teacher, Mrs Rattray, says thanks to those who have sent along art supplies.  Please continue to send these along, including old lego pieces, bubble wrap, craft sand, tin pie pans, wallpaper pieces, sandpaper, and plastic plates,.  Also she could use some old picture frames to display the students fine artwork.

One final message from the Renfrew County Transportation Consortium regarding the road closure on Borden avenue from Dec 11 until Dec 16.You will not be able to travel completely around Borden Ave due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment assisting in the construction of new residences.
We ask that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic.  They also wanted us to announce that there may be slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.
Recommendations for walkers/ cyclists are as follows:
·         Students that are approaching on Borden Ave coming from the direction of Wolfe Ave should be           advised that they are to use the entrance into the school yard at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.
·         Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from DundonaldDr are to continue as they normally would but are to be advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days as the buses will be using this portion of Borden Ave to go to and from General Lake P.S.
This is the first phase of construction for the new residences on Borden Ave, so please expect these changes to be implemented again in the future, if you have any questions or recommendations please do not hesitate to contact the Renfrew County Transportation Consortium.

Have a great week. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday.
