September 29, 2013 Sunday Night update

Good Evening. Deb Legault here with your Sunday Night update from General Lake. As you probably know parts of Borden are closed due to the installation of water and sewer for the new residences in this area. There will continue to be delays until Nov 1 which effects drop off times as well as access to the road.
General Lake is pleased to announce a cover design contest for our Yearbook.  Entries are due November 14.
Our Hot lunches are back by popular demand starting Oct 18. Watch for the forms to be distributed this week. Forms also available on the blog.
Our 'We Starve Hunger' food drive was officially launched at our September Character Assembly. Students are asked to bring in a canned food item or for those that celebrate Halloween, they can trick or treat for canned foods rather than candy. Specific food items requested by the food bank include rice, canned tomato sauce, baby food items, canned vegetables and more. Please check out the blog for a complete list. Students interested in trick or treating should see me and pick up a planning package.
Our Lost and Found is beginning to overflow. Please make it a point to stop by the school to look through the items.
School Council Blog is up and running. Please check it out at http://generallakeschoolcouncil.blogspot.ca/. There is a link on the School Blog.

Power of One Anti-bullying Presentation

Soren Bennick's The Power of One™

A bullying-proofing performance for elementary school children

The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colours, and masks to vividly portray what bullying is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report and deal with bullying when they see it. The Power of One:
  • Explains the roles in bullying: Bully, Target, and Bystander
  • Shows vivid examples of different types of bullying: Physical, Verbal, Exclusion, and Cyber bullying
  • Alerts children that Targets need help and intervention
  • Encourages students not to be bystanders
  • Emphasizes the need for individual action to make the community a safer, better place
  • Refers children to parents, adults, and teachers for further assistance and instruction
The set for the Power of One consists of a series of boxes that fit inside each other like a Russian egg. Each box is a different colour: green, purple, yellow, and white, representing the different roles in the bullying process.
Following the colour scheme of the boxes, the actors put on a green mask when they play the Bully, a purple mask when they play the Target, and a yellow mask for the Bystander.
The highlight of the performance is when a volunteer from the audience looks into the Power of One box (which contains a mirror) and sees himself/herself!
This leads to the audience taking the Power of One anti-bullying oath and the conclusion of the performance.

Sunday September 8, 2013 Sunday Night Update From General Lake

Good Evening Deb Legault here with your weekly update from General Lake Public School. We had a wonderful opening last Tuesday as the students were welcomed into their classes. Students, staff and parents were happy to be back into the routine and welcoming the opportunity to renew their commitment to make a positive change. Building strong character is a number one priority at General Lake, as well as promoting a healthy and safe lifestyle.
The RCDSB  have changed to a five day cycle instead of following the Mon to Friday model. You will notice this change on the weekly schedule sent given by teachers. Therefore we began on Day 1 so this Monday is Day 5; Tuesday is Day 1; Wednesday is Day 2; Thursday is Day 3 and Friday will be Day 4. In the event of a holiday, PA Day or Snow day it will be Day 0 and the next day will be the regularly scheduled day so no day is missed.  It will take a little getting use to, but I am confident once things get rolling we will adjust.
Agenda's have arrived for our Grade 1-8 students. We encourage all parents to review the opening pages for important information about our school. Also it is important to check the agenda daily as it provides communication for parent and school, as well as an organizational tool for important dates and assignments.
This week the Cross Country Events begin at our school promoting an active healthy lifestyle for all ages.   Students in grades 4-8 who signed up for the cross country run will be meeting Mme Cathy Monday , Wednesday  and Friday for their training session at 8:30. Students are reminded to bring a water bottle and to have running shoes.  This is a competitive event so students are expected to be at all practices rain or shine. Some cuts may have to be made as we get closer to the event.
On Tuesday and Thursday it is my Fun Run at 8:30. Parents, staff and students are welcome to join me as we take a few laps around the yard.  This is non-competitive and meant to promote healthy lifestyle and personal best.  Everyone in grade 3-8 is welcome attend. Students in younger grades are welcome to attend with parental supervision.
On Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 our kindergarten classes will meet for a 'Welcome to GL' assembly. We will be reviewing the school rules, as well as having a special presentation by a visiting artist Sarah Parkin. Parents, as always, are welcome to attend our assemblies.
On Thursday we invite our community to come into our school for our 'Meet the Teacher' event from 4:30 until 6:00pm .
On Friday it is our school spirit day where staff and students are encouraged to wear our school colours purple and yellow. Students in Grade 7 and 8 are welcome to join Mme DeAbreu at lunch for her Dancefit class. We will also be having a school-wide cheer event in the gym at 2:45 for Grade 1-8 students.
Finally Family.ca is having a contest to win an anti-bullying rally for the school. A number of students have already approached me about signing the forms. I encourage everyone to enter this event and I will be happy to sign any forms. Just another great way for us to bring awareness to this problem and take a stand against bullying and its harmful effects.

Mark your calendars for the following up and coming events:
Sept 18 School Council meeting at 6:00 pm
Sept 25 Picture Day

Have a great week and remember its worth a run to the Lake!! Enjoy the rest of your evening!
