French Immersion
Being able to speak both of Canada's official languages is a huge advantage for any Canadian student.
Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) students have an opportunity to pursue one of three possible French as a Second Language programs:
- Regular program with 30 minutes of core French daily is available to all grades in our elementary schools
- Partial French immersion with 50 per cent French programming and 50 per cent English programming to students in grades five to 12 in designated elementary and secondary schools.
- Full French immersion (JK to grade eight) is available for qualified Petawawa students.
Students in the regular program develop their French communication skills, apply their knowledge and understanding in all subject areas, and acquire organization and leadership skills.
French immersion is intended for Anglophone families. Parents/guardians and students do not have to speak French at home. Students enrolled in French immersion benefit from strong organizational skills as information is often presented at a faster pace. A keen motivation to learn French is also beneficial.
Eligibility
Students who wish to apply for French immersion must meet the following criteria:
- Acceptable performance in the regular academic program and acceptable learning skills;
- A satisfactory degree of student motivation and commitment;
- Acceptable performance in French as a Second Language (FSL) core program;
- Joint decision by parents/guardians and students;
- The recommendation of the FSL teacher and principal; and
- Support at home that encourages learning and effort
