Monday, September 2, 2013 Weekly Message

GOOD EVENING! Deb Legault back with your regular weekly update from General Lake Public School.
Tomorrow, Tuesday Sept 3 we welcome back our returning students, as well as our new General Lake members.  We also welcome some new staff members including  our new Vice Principal Mme Robillard, Immersion Kindergarten teacher Mme Stone-Butterworth, Grade 3/4  teacher Ms. Martinat, Core English Teacher Ms Bennett, 3/4 Immersion Teacher Mme Macphee. We also welcome Ms Boudens in the Office,  New Educational Assistants Ms Murphy, Ms Dominey, and Ms Armstrong, and Custodial Staff Mrs Heany.

Supervision begins on the yard at 9:00 and at 9:20 students from Grade 1-8 will enter the school and go directly to the gym. I invite our intermediate students to arrive 5 minutes earlier to wear a vest and join me in helping with the organization, as well as our first assembly at 2:45.  Senior kindergartens will be be met by their teachers on the kindergarten yard and brought to their classes.  We will see some of our Jk's either Sept 3, or 4 in the gym at 10:00 for an orientation meeting. Parents are welcome at 9:20 to join us in the gym for our quick introductions and announcements of the classes.

At the end of the day all K-2 immersion walking students will exit through the front doors. All English walkers will exit through the North door, at the right of the school. If you are picking up your child, particularly our younger children you must identify yourself to the teacher before taking your child. It may take a few extra minutes waiting but it is to ensure the safety of all students.

A reminder we have some students with life threatening allergies to nuts. Please refrain from sending items that contain nuts or may contain traces of nuts to the school. When sending WOW butter the peanut butter substitute, please ensure it is clearly labelled to eliminate any confusion and undue anxiety experienced by students with nut allergies.

We have chocolate and white milk available for sale for $.75 at first nutrition break beginning tomorrow. Kindergarten students can purchase coupons $7.50 for 10 or $15.00 for 20.

Agenda's will be available for students in Grade 1-8 for purchase at $8.00 per agenda with a maximum cost for families of $16.00. We encourage all parents to purchase this organization tool to help students keep organized, as well as to provide a forum for parent teacher communication. Parents should regularly check the agenda and sign daily.

On Thursday, I invite  students from Grade 3-8 to join me in a running club at 8:30 am. This club will take place every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:30-9:00 until October 10.  Parents are welcome to join us. The emphasis of this club will be achieving personal best rather than competition.

On Friday lets show our school spirit, as well as pride for our troops and wear red.  Like last year, each student will be assigned a colour to represent their spirit team.  Points are calculated for the number of students from each colour participating. Its a friendly and fun competition designed to promote school engagement and interest. Throughout the year we have a variety of spirit days. I will be consulting with the intermediate team to create a variety of fun days.

Also for the safety of all of our students our front door has now been set with a camera and buzz in system. As always our doors will remain locked throughout the day and visitors will have to ring bell to gain entry.  All visitors will be expected to sign in and wear a visitors pass when entering the hallways of our school.

Finally mark your calendar for September 18 for our School Council  Meeting at 6:00pm in our Library. We will be holding our General Elections where we have a number of opportunities available for parents to be involved in the school.  Children are welcome to attend.

Its going to be a great year to be at the Lake! See everyone tomorrow!
