Beginning in January, the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre will be holding two different programs, one for boys and one for girls. These programs are part of the One Circle Foundation, whose mission is as follows: "One Circle Foundation promotes resiliency in children and youth, families, adults, and communities by offering circle program models that create, restore, and sustain healthy relationships. One Circle Foundation recognizes that healthy relationships are the core element to a healthy individual, family, society, and world."
Firstly, Boys Council is a model of structured, gender relevant support groups for boys from 10-12 years. Each week, a group of six to ten boys meet with two or three facilitators for two hours. This program gives boys an opportunity to express ideas and emotions in a safe place, and will work to strengthen their inherent preference to live according to good and diverse pro-social values. This program will run every Thursday, including Thursday January 17th, 24th, 31st, February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, March 7th, 21st, 28th and April 4th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
Secondly, Girls Circle will present A Day of Antibullying. As we know, bullying continues to be an issue in schools, playgrounds, and on the internet. This is a full day workshop that will focus on the bully, the victim, and the bystander. Information will be given on how to successfully stop bullying, and how and when to correctly report a bullying incident. There will also be a focus on cyber bullying, and we will take a look at current events relevant to the topic. The girls will participate in engaging games and activities to increase awareness on the topic of bullying. This is open to girls aged 10-12. It takes place on January 26th from 9:30am – 3:30pm.
Both programs are free and occur at the South Side Community Centre at 1578 Wolfe Ave. Petawawa.
