 General Lake School Council
Annual Report for the 2012-2013 School Year
June 17, 2013
Dear Parents and School Community:
The General Lake School Council had a very rewarding 2012-2013 School Year. The School Council held 10 meetings: September 17th, 2012 - October 10th, 2012 - November 14th, 2012 - December 12th, 2012 – January 16th, 2013 - February 13th, 2013 - March 20th, 2013 - April 17th, 2013 - May 29th, 2013 and June 12th, 2013. The Council worked on various issues during the year including: anti-bullying; the importance of recess; healthy hot lunches; ways to better informed parents; improving teacher and parent communication; building our Community; children’s mental health and ways to keep School Council informed by sharing information from the Ministry of Education, the Renfrew County District School Board, the Parent Involvement Committee, the People for Education and the Ontario College of Teachers. These meetings were open to the public to encourage input from parents and other members of the school community.
The purpose of the School Council is to help improve students achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents. School Councils are advisory organizations. A School Council’s primary means of achieving its purpose is by making recommendations to the Principal of the school and the School Board. Boards and Principals are responsible for considering the recommendations made by each School Council and for advising the Council(s) of the actions taken in response to the recommendations.
Additional achievements of the School Council in 2012-2013 included the following: Open house with partners from our community; School Council Blog; a name for the new k-12 school; healthy hot lunch program; creation, distribution and collection of the 'Get Involved' school volunteer forms; After School French club; Dr Seuss literacy evening; Education Week Celebration; Jeremy’s Vision presentation to Junior/intermediate students; information session on 'Anxiety in Children' and 'Temperament and Goodness of Fit' ; student volunteer luncheon with certificates; bulbs donation to the Memory Garden in Pembroke in memory of former teacher Barbara Grant and the End of School Year celebration
Fundraising activities were also conducted, and the proceeds were used to fund projects in accordance with School Board policies. The School Council raised funds for: technology, school trips, cultural performances, graduation, and butterfly kits. The fund-raising activities included: hot lunches, compliant with the Ontario School Food And Beverage Policy (PPM150); Lamontagne 2012 catalogues; Christmas Gift and Craft Show; and Spring Vesey’s Bulbs. Minutes of meetings held and financial records are available for public inspection at the school office.
We wish to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the many individuals who volunteered their time to contribute to the success of the School Council this year. Special thanks to the following members of the 2012-2013 School Council: Sarah Perras, Adelle Bemister, Lindsay Allan, Karen White, Guylaine Lapierre, Stacy Godin, Erin Morawiec, Rowana Brown, and Jennifer Wiertel. Also a special thank you to our Principal, Lizanne Lacelle, our Vice-Principal, Deborah Legault and all the Staff for their continued support and partnership. Finally, we wish the best of luck to the candidates in the 2013-2014 School Council elections. Election date to elect new Executives will be Wednesday, September 18th 2013 at 6:00pm in the school library. We encourage everyone to attend. We hope that you will all have a safe and happy summer.
Sincerely yours,
Claudia Major General Lake School Council Chair
