Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Public Speaking: Way to Go Remi!
In March, 2013 Remi Lavoie represented our school at the Regional Public Speaking event in Renfrew. We are extremely pleased to announce that she placed first in her division and she will continue to demonstrate her skills in Napanee, ON. All parents are welcome to attend all the events. Come and support our school!

Aboriginal Experiences

Staff and students were amazed and astounded as the stage production "Tales from Turtle Island" visited our school on March 7, 2013.  Performers presented a traditional storytelling theatre and an interactive Pow Wow dance performance. This experience was brought to the school as part of the school's We Day promise to promote awareness of Aboriginal issues through the 'We Stand Together' initiative. Special thanks to the General Lake School Council and the support of the General Lake Community for bringing this opportunity.

Welcome
We would like to wish a warm welcome to Ms. Karen Wood, who is returning to our school. She will be teaching core English and Health.

SCIENCE FAIR

Our annual Grade 6- 8 Science Fair was held on March 26th.  We had four judges on hand from AECL who were very impressed by the initiative that was demonstrated by students who presented projects this year.  Jada McInnis and Emma Campbell received honourable mention for their great work!  The top projects for our grade 6 to 8 students were:  Abby Jupp with the Egg Experiment; Remi Lavoie with Allergies and Jaden Prigione and Colby Gillard with Electricity.  Thank you to all of our participants and congratulations to all the winners!!  General Lake Science Fair winners are invited to participate in the Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair, April 6th at the Civic Center.

Our Primary Science Fair was held on March 28th from 12:15 -3:00 in the gymnasium. There were many wonderful and informative projects.  First place in each grade goes to: Grade 1 Morgan Henry with 'Helping the Planet'; Grade 2 Jamie Lush 'Human Babies' and  Claire Bemister with 'Soap Cloud'; Grade 3 Deven Prigione, Mitchell Smith and Drew Hoffman with  "Electricity"; Grade 4 was  Bobby Lavoie and Madison Spitzig, "How to make a Homemade Bouncy Ball" ; finally in  Grade 5 the winners were  "Body Decay" by Alyssa Godfrey and Sheridan Skanes, "Rocket" by Conner Stencil; "Difference between pop and water" by Trinity Cronin and "Fish Mummy" by Tommy Campbell, Dante Hoffman and Aiden Baird. Special thanks to our grade 8 students from Mrs. Marquardt's class for taking their time to judge all the wonderful projects.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT

Breakfast is often called “the most important meal of the day” for good reason! A morning meal helps refuel the body after sleep and contributes essential nutrients important for children’s healthy growth and development.  Eating a nutritious breakfast helps children pay full attention and learn well at school and can help promote a healthy body weight.
  • Have a balanced breakfast everyday.
  • Choose foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups in Canada’s Food Guide for a nutritious breakfast; such as a bowl of cereal with fruit and milk or whole grain bagel with peanut butter or cheese and fruit juice.
  • Plan ahead by setting the table the night before and wake up a little earlier if you find you run out of time for breakfast in the morning.

Summer Booster Program 2013

The Booster Program is an educational half-day program held during the month of July for students in grade 1 and 2 who need some extra assistance in developing reading, language or math skills.

Your child’s teacher may recommend that this program would benefit your child.  Registration forms are due to your child’s teacher by April 23th.

The Scholasic Book Fair
is coming to General Lake!

We invite your entire family to come and see the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Book Fair, at least $6 in product goes directly back to our school? Your support of this event is key to our obtaining new resources for our library and school.

When :  Monday to Friday May 6-10, 2013
  9:20 am to 4:00 pm

Where :  General Lake Public School, in the library

School Council

Education is a partnership involving parents, students, and staff.  When parents are involved in their children’s education, the level of student achievement increases.  The role of the General Lake School Council is to work together with the school staff to improve the school community and learning opportunities.
The General Lake School Council would like to thank everyone for their participation in our Spring Fundraiser Vesey’s Bulbs 2013.
Please keep sending in your Moncion Receipts over $25.00. Moncion’s will donate 1% of sales to the school from the receipts. The receipts must be stamped at the time of purchase and be from the Petawawa Location.
Jer’s Vision event was held on March 27 for our junior and intermediate students discussing anti-bullying and anti-discrimination programming.  We give out a big thank you to Mme Perras for organizing all of this.

Our next meeting is scheduled for April 17th at 6:00 PM in the school library. All parents are welcome to attend!!
