Students from General Lake are invited to participate in our School-wide Science Fair
Grade 6-8: March 26 12:15 pm
Grade 1-5: March 28 12:15 pm

Students in Grade 6-8 who win the competition at the school level can become eligible to participate in the Renfrew County Science and Technology Fair.  Parents are responsible to register their children in this event if they qualify at the school level.

Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair  HYPERLINK "http://rcrsf.ca/" http://rcrsf.ca/
This year’s Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair is April 5-6,  2013 at the Petawawa Civic Center.
Science/Technology Fairs are a chance for students to work on a project related to some aspect of science, typically an experiment, innovation or study. The students' work is presented at a science fair and the students are evaluated on their scientific thought, originality, understanding, and the exhibit itself.
The best projects in each category are given awards and the best projects in the fair will move on to the Canada Wide Science Fair. This years’ award is an all expense paid trip to the CWSF. Canada-Wide Science Fair 2013 will be held in Lethbridge, Alberta, from May 11-18.   If you need further clarification of the rules please send an email to  HYPERLINK "mailto:info@rcrsf.ca?subject=Question" info@rcrsf.ca.  Registration closes March 31, 2013.

Safe, Respectful, Responsible and Caring Environment

Allergy Sensitive School
Parents are reminded that we have students in the school who have life threatening allergies to all nuts.  Please continue to check the ingredients of all food your child brings to school. Thank you for assisting us at the school in our efforts to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all.  With your cooperation we can minimize the risk of an allergic reaction.

Anxiety in Children and Strategies
Free information session with Gregory Lubimiv at General Lake PS on February 21st 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Anxiety is the most common disorder of children (and adults) today.  It is estimated that 8% to 10% of children suffer from anxiety disorder, but these can increase when stressful events occur.  Participants will have a clear understanding of what anxiety is and how it can appear in different forms for different children at different ages.  Participants will also be presented with treatment approaches for these children as well as strategies which can be used to decrease anxiety and/or develop greater resilience for children and youth in school and at home.

Habit of Mind for February: Caring

Snow Days
Hot Lunches
In case a snow day falls on hot lunch day, all hot lunches will be postponed until the next regular school day.
Snow Day: Before/After School activities
If a snow day falls on a day with a sporting event or French club day, the event will be cancelled.

Wise Use of Resources

Moving? Posted?
The year is moving quickly and we are beginning preparations for next year.  It is important that we know which of our students will be remaining at General Lake Public School and which students are leaving the area.   If you are posted, plan to move, or know your child will not be attending General Lake Public School in September please inform the office.
Should your child not be returning to General Lake, it is important to keep your child’s records with you.  Most schools require proof of birth, immunization records, recent report card and the name, address  and phone number of last school attended.

Public Speaking
February 13th and 14th, General Lake Public School held its school wide Public Speaking Event.  Staff, students and parents gathered as students participated in what was an exciting, entertaining and informative 'Speak off'.  It was a very close race as the General Lake students demonstrated originality, fluency and a natural sincere manner in delivering their material.  Successful candidates are now invited to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion's Public Speaking Event on Sunday Feb 17 at 12:30 at Branch 517.  Congratulations to our top contestants in the primary Kaleb Thompson, Kathryne Easter, Alec Lavoie.  In the Junior level Bobbi Lavoie, Remi Lavoie, and Abby Jupp. And finally in the intermediate level Fiona MacPherson, Madisenn Walsh and Tiana Ingram.  Good luck General Lake.

Seuss Filled Magniferous Literacy Day
On January 24, 2013 it was a Seuss-filled Extravaganza at General Lake Public School in recognition of Family Literacy Day.  Students came to school in Seuss -inspired costumes during the day, then brought their family out for an evening of fun complete with an Italicious meal, a Book Swap and many Seussical activities.  This special day communicates the important message that reading and learning habits developed at an early age set the stage for our success later in life. Special thanks to the School Council and the General Lake student leaders for all their work organizing a very seussessful, fantabulous, magniferous event.

Jer’s Vision Comes to General Lake
Jer's Vision is a leader in anti-bullying and anti-discrimination programming. They are a youth led organization that is making a real difference in the communities they work in.
This organization looks at diversity inclusively, this means they look at all forms of discrimination. They are also unique because their programming reaches out not just to the marginalized/minority populations, but also to the general population, thereby engaging them in taking a proactive role in preventing discrimination by promoting diversity themselves.
General Lake is pleased to announce that Jer’s Vision will run a program with our junior and  intermediate students on February 21, 2013.  More information about the program can be found at  HYPERLINK "http://www.jersvision.org" www.jersvision.org.

Family Day
There is nothing more valuable to families than time together.  And yet it seems tougher than ever to find, with so many of us living such busy lives.  That’s why, on Monday, February 18, 2013 –on the third Monday of February, Ontarians celebrate Family Day. This public holiday is a special day designed to spend some quality time with your family. We hope that you have made this day a special one for your family.

A  Message From the School Council
     http://www.generallakeschoolcouncil.blogspot.ca/
The General Lake School Council would like to thank our parents for their participation in our Family Literacy Italicious dinner on January 24th. The evening was a great success because of your positive response. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent volunteer: Adelle Beminster, Lindsay Allan, Guylaine Lapierre, Lori Lavoie, and Sarah Perras for their precious assistance in making this event run smoothly. The School Council was able to offer this Italian meal at a low price because of the support of Moncion's in our Literacy evening and because of your Moncion's Receipts. Keep sending your stamped receipts. Also we would like to congratulate our ABC Life Literacy Canada door Prize winners: Chloé Crouzat, Mackenzie Carter Gorin and Willem Jobe.
A gentle reminder that you are invited to attend our information session on Anxiety in Children and Strategies with Mr Gregory Lubimiv from the Phoenix Center here at General Lake PS on February 21st 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.    Please note that our spring fundraiser for this year will feature a wonderful range of flower bulbs, more details to come in the following weeks. We look forward to seeing you at our next School Council meeting February 13th at 6:00pm in the School Library.

We Create Change:
‘Free The Children’ Penny Drive for Water
As part of our caring community and commitment to make a change globally, General Lake Public School is collecting pennies for water. 2500 pennies can provide clean water to one person for life in developing countries.  There is a container in the front lobby where you can drop them off. Thank you in advance for your donations. Pennies will be dropped off at the RBC the last week before the March Break.
