General Lake Celebrates La Semaine de la Francophonie

General Lake Celebrates La Semaine de la Francophonie

From March 5 through to March 9, 2012, General Lake Public School held its first annual Celebration of La Semaine de la Francophonie. This celebration aims to underline the value and the importance of the French language both in Canada and in the world. During the Opening ceremonies, students in the Junior-Intermediate French Immersion classes performed music and dance from Guinea, Tunisia and New Brunswick’s Acadian Culture in front of students, staff and parents. Throughout the week, the school celebrated countries like France, Vietnam, Switzerland, Eqypt, Senegal and Canada through performances, workshops and a cultural fair. On Thursday, students, staff and parents were entertained by the musical antics of folk singers 'La Ridaine'. Students were given the opportunity to experience traditional French Canadian music, as well as try out a variety of instruments including the button accordian, fiddle, harmonica, spoons, drums and bonhomme-gui-gigue. Thanks to MASC, as well as the Parent Council for supporting this performance in our school. Special thanks to Mme Nadia Haddad (Grade 7/8 French immersion teacher) and Mme Aimee De Abreu (Grade 4/5 French Immersion) for leading this wonderful project.

IT'S ALL ABOUT RESPECT AT GLK

It was all about RESPECT, as staff, students, and parents convened in the gym on the opening day for their first assembly of the 2013-2014 school year at General Lake Public School. Student leaders introduced the rules of the school and participated in a rap song about Respect. The assembly was a wonderful welcome back and set a positive tone for, what is sure to be, a fantastic final year for General Lake Public School. School Handbook

We’re working with You!
All of us at General Lake Public School are dedicated to providing a stimulating, creative and supportive atmosphere in which your children can mature into competent, responsible and caring citizens.
As your children progress through school you are bound to have questions about their education. This handbook is designed to respond to the most common questions, please keep it for quick reference. Contact the school at any time with questions, suggestions, and ideas.
As a parent, you are the foundation of your children’s education and I encourage you to be involved with our school community and school council. We welcome your participation and involvement.

Safe Arrivals
In order to ensure the safe arrival of student to school each day, we are required to make contact with a parent or guardian for any student that is absent. Please call the school secretary to report your child’s absence each day that your child is not attending school. It is also helpful to call if you know your child will be late as he/she has an appointment. You may also call before school hours and leave a message on our voice mail @ 613-687-2404
Regulation 298 section 23 (2) states that when a pupil returns to school after an absence, a parent or guardian of the pupil shall give reason for the absence orally or in writing as the principal requires.
A note in your child’s agenda would suffice in this circumstance as would a phone call to the secretary.
After School Pick-up
To have your child picked up after school, please call the school before 3:00 pm.

Emergency Procedures
In the event of an emergency, it is absolutely critical that everyone in the school knows what to do and responds automatically. In order for this to happen, time is spent regularly reviewing and practicing the unforeseen. We have school-wide fire, evacuation, and lockdown drills to ensure that students are aware and comfortable with the appropriate procedures. Parents will be contacted directly in the event of an emergency evacuation.

Medication
Any student requiring medication (self-administered or by the school) must obtain a permission form from the office. All medications are kept in a locked location at the office. Students with severe allergic reactions carry an extra inhaler or Epipen with them. Students needing to carry inhalers or other emergency treatment preparations must have written permission from the office using the standardized forms. Parents should give all other forms of medication at home. DO NOT send medications to school with your child. Medical bulletins are posted in the staff room for all staff to be aware of students with potentially life-threatening medical conditions.

Newsletters/ Weekly Message/ School Blog
A newsletter will be sent home on a monthly basis with the children of each family in our school. The newsletter will contain information concerning events in the school, recognize outstanding work in and out of the school by students, inform parents of classroom programs or policies which may be of interest, and provide a showcase for some examples of student work. A weekly message will be sent out by telephone with weekly updates about events and announcements from our school. Electronic Devices
All electronic devices are permitted to be used at school provided students/parents have reviewed the guidelines for appropriate use, as outlined in the Renfrew County District School Board Policy and Form 141-1, Appropriate Use Contract for Students, has been signed. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Agenda
In September, all students from grade 1 to 8 will be asked to contribute to purchase a school agenda book to help them organize their day. These day planners will help you to plan your child’s time and assignments. All students are expected to use them for recording homework and for home-school communication. Please review the agenda daily with your child.

Student Transportation
Student transportation is a privilege, not a right. If necessary, the privilege of riding the bus may be suspended.
Responsibility for the safety of bus passengers rests not only on the driver, but also with the student riders, their parents/guardians, and school staff. Bus rules should be reviewed at home and at school to ensure that routines are established. Students, whether daily or occasional riders, are expected to observe these rules:
Be at the stop 10 minutes in advance of scheduled pick up time to keep the bus on schedule.
Wait off the road until the bus comes to a full stop.
Wait for the go-ahead signal from the driver and look both ways before crossing the road.
Obey promptly any direction or instructions given by the driver including the allocation of seats.
Remain seated at all times.
Keep aisles clear of belongings and do not leave articles on the bus

Use indoor voices to avoid distracting the driver through excessive noise or unreasonable behaviour
Keep arms, head and feet inside the bus.
Stay with the bus in case of road emergency
Assist in the safety and comfort of small children
Be respectful of the bus and any of its equipment.
No eating or drinking while on the bus
**Buses are not to be used for the purpose of transporting children to birthday parties and sleepovers, etc. It is the parents’ responsibility to provide such service. Bus Passes are issued for emergency situations only.
In the event of inappropriate behaviour, the following procedures will be followed:
The school bus driver will seek the cooperation of a misbehaving student.
If the student refuses to cooperate, the school principal/vice-principal is informed by the driver.
The principal/vice-principal will inform the parent and the student will be given consequences accordingly.
Drivers inform the office of misconduct, and repeat offenders lose the privilege of riding the bus. Students, who damage the bus, other than through regular use, will be required to pay for repair costs.
Please discuss the rules and regulations with your children in the interest of safety for all children!

Bus Cancellation
During severe inclement weather conditions when buses may not be running, please listen to the local radio station MY FM 96.1 or STAR 96.7 FM or check the website (http://www.rcjtc.on.ca/) in order to determine if buses have been cancelled. If the bus does not pick a student up in the morning to take them to school, it will not be bringing him or her home. On such days, our regular academic programs may not be offered; however, an alternate program will be provided.

Walkers and Bicyclists
Please help us by discussing with your child some simple safety rules such as:
Use sidewalks.
Cross at the corners/crosswalks.
Do not walk or cross the parking lot.
If your child cycles to school, make sure the bike is in good working condition, also make sure your child wears an approved helmet.
Bikes are to be parked and locked in the bike racks.
Sidewalks are for walkers
Cyclists using the sidewalk must give way to walkers.
Rules for cyclists apply to skateboarders, rollerblades and scooters.
Students must walk their bikes/skateboards on school property.

Dress Code
Clothing worn by student at General Lake Public school must be appropriate for active play and presentable for the school as a work place. The dress code developed by the school council and the Renfrew DSB states:
· Students are expected to attend school in neat clean tidy and modest clothing
· Indoor and outdoor shoes are required.
· No hats or caps in school
· Shorts and skirts are to be to tips of fingers.
· Shirts must cover the midriff.
· Sleeveless shirts are acceptable but must follow the “three finger rule”.
· Any clothing with depicts advertising for drug, tobacco or alcohol products, rude pictures or vulgar expressions or graphics is prohibited
· Footwear must be appropriate
· IF ATTIRE IS QUESTIONABLE IT IS UNACCEPTABLE
Recognizing the dangers of cords and drawstrings, we recommend the use of neck warmers rather than scarves.
Indoor shoes
Students are required to have of indoor shoes for use inside the building. Stocking feet are strongly discouraged for reasons of health and safety. During inclement weather traffic in the hallways often leaves the floors wet or muddy. Fire drills are practiced three times in the fall and spring; students cannot take time to put on outside shoes. This pair of indoor shoes could be your child’s gym shoes.
Label All Belongings
Each year an incredible amount of clothing including hats, mitts, t-shirts, coats, boots etc. are misplaced. We have a lost-and-found area located at the front entrance but many of these articles are never claimed. We urge parents to write their children’s name or initials on their belongings and to check the lost and found area at the front entrance whenever they are visiting the school. Three times a year (December, March and June), we wash and recycle some items and send the rest to community charities.
Nutrition Breaks
· Avoid all nut products as our school is a nut-reduced facility.
· There are two opportunities for students to eat during the school day: mid morning and early afternoon.
· Students are to bring healthy food each day. Milk (white or chocolate) is sold each day at nutrition breaks. Students are expected to remain on school property during Nutrition Breaks.
· All food is to be eaten in the classroom. No food is to be eaten outside. “Garbage-less” lunches are encouraged.
· Students are expected to remain seated while eating and leave their spots to tidy at the end of lunch. Carbonated soft drinks are strongly discouraged.
Outside recess
Students enjoy a break from the morning and the afternoon routines during which time they can get some fresh air and enjoy recreational time with their friends. All of us are better able to work after a short break.
Students are expected to dress for the weather and be prepared to spend 20 minutes outside enjoying the benefits of the fresh air, exercise and socializing with friends. Students will be outside unless the weather is too inclement (i.e. temperatures below -200C or raining too hard) to be outside.
Teachers occasionally receive notes requesting that a student stay in for recess. Students who return to school after a brief illness also benefit from recess. Fresh air and exercise are not detrimental to individuals recovering from the flu or a cold, especially when a student is properly dressed for the weather. Parents can help by encouraging their children to dress appropriately for the weather and allowing children to bring appropriate and labeled play equipment (footballs, soccer balls, skipping ropes), so that they have something to do and enjoy with their friends.
An ill child risks spreading the condition to classmates, and should remain at home until well enough to participate in regular school activities. There are exceptions to this practice. In very special cases, (i.e. a child recovering from physical injury), a child may need to stay inside for his/her safety. We do however; expect our students to participate in nutritional breaks. Homework can be sent home with a sibling or friend.
During inclement or extreme cold conditions, we have indoor recesses.

Indoor Recess
When students must remain inside due to inclement weather, they are expected to remain in their classes, use indoor voices, find a quiet activity (board games, reading, colouring, cards etc.), and remain seated either on a chair or on the floor. Students are required to have a hall pass to leave the classroom for any reason.

Helping your child Succeed at School You are the first and most important teacher your child will have throughout the learning years. The examples you set will help determine your child’s attitude.
For instance, if you enjoy reading and the sharing of ideas, your child will probably enjoy these activities as well. Display confidence in your child’s abilities, strengths or special talents. Set goals that are realistic and attainable because the self-confidence developed at home can be extremely helpful in building self-confidence in school and the outside world. Family experiences (i.e. visits to parks, museums, historical sights, trips, picnics, workplaces) are all opportunities to help stimulate your child’s skills in thinking, recall and verbal development.
When your child begins school, your role as an educator does not suddenly end, and your child will need your encouragement and will be more motivated if you take an interest in school work. Close contact with the teacher(s) is helpful, because you can provide valuable insights and support for your child’s development.

Homework
It is reasonable to expect some homework during the year. The good news is that the harder the students work in class, the less work they will have at home!
Homework may include:
Finishing up class work
Reviewing things you learned in class
Working on projects and stories
Getting ready for tests
Reading
Memorizing number facts
You may want to help your child at home with the basic skills required in the classroom. There are a number of practical ways for you to do this including:
§ Reading aloud to your child (even if they are already readers)
§ Listening to your child read
§ Helping your child develop social skills through cooperative play, membership in groups or clubs, and assistance in learning how to solve problems.
As well parents should regularly discuss what is being done at school and ask questions to get a full understanding of your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Children flourish under care, guidance, and ongoing support.

v All visitors must sign in and obtain a visitor’s pass at the office prior to going anywhere in the school
v Visitors are not allowed on the school yard without informing a staff member on yard duty.
v Visitors picking up students for appointments or after school are required to remain at the office and allow the child/ren to be paged by the secretarial staff
v Visitors are asked to respect the school dress code by dressing appropriately and removing hats/caps upon entering the building.
Who Helps With Homework?
Teachers help student to be responsible when they:
Provide clear instructions, expectations an deadlines
Ensure that assigned homework is relevant to classroom activities.
Prepare students in class before assigning work to be done at home.
Recognize that there will be occasions when there are legitimate reasons for homework to be incomplete
Parents help student to be responsible when they
Provide a quiet work area
Have a special time set aside for homework each school day evening
Have reference and resource material available (dictionary, paper)
Assist children with their assignments, but not do the assignment
Show support and interest in what a child is doing
Students demonstrate responsibility when they
Always complete their homework
Do their class assignments (If you work hard in class, you won’t have as much homework)
Use their agenda to record all class work and assignments
Make sure they have everything they need before they go home

Note: Finishing your homework means you don’t have to:
Finish your work at school during nutrition breaks
Involve your parents in signing your homework or have the teacher phone home
Be left out of school activities
Defining our School’s Culture
Defining a school culture is setting the school environment apart from other cultures: home, hockey, business, etc. There will be some similarities but there will also be differences. The staff of General Lake is committed to making conscious decisions to examine what we value, clearly communicate these values and expectations to our students and then model what these are to the students. Students are expected to use appropriate actions within our school community.
Respect
Students are expected to:
ü Show respect to themselves and all others in the school. This includes all personal and school property. Students should treat others the way they want to be treated.
ü Cooperate with and follow directions given by bus drivers, volunteers, custodial staff, office staff and teachers in the school, on the yard, on the bus and during field trips/functions.
ü Be friendly and courteous with all members of our community.
ü Be honest and accepting of others and their differences.
ü Wear appropriate clothing according to the school dress code and remove hats when entering the school.
Safety
All students must feel safe at school. Students are expected to:
ü Play responsibly and respectfully. Physical contact, rough play, bullying, put downs and teasing are hurtful and will not be tolerated.
ü Walk in the school in a quiet and orderly manner
ü Students must remain on the school property at all times unless they have specific permission to leave.

Head Shave Event by Ethan and Jackson

On Friday May 31, General Lake students Ethan and Jackson Alexander shaved their heads to raise funds for cancer research. Hairdresser Ashley May from Hair Affairs volunteered to shave the boys heads in front of the school during their monthly character assembly. The boys have been growing their hair for two years in anticipation for the event and they were pleased to present a cheque for over $2000.00 to the Cancer Society. GLPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan

Definition: The Ontario Ministry of Education defines bullying as “a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance.”
Bullying is a repeated and deliberate abuse of power or an act directed at someone to cause them harm or fear. Some examples of bullying include:
· Making fun of, punching or physically threatening someone;
· Creating false rumours and gossiping about someone;
· Insults about someone's sexual orientation or nationality; and
· Excluding someone intentionally and repeatedly from a group, causing that person to feel that they don't belong.
Some examples of unpleasant behaviours that are not bullying include:
· Not liking someone;
· Being excluded from a group of friends occasionally;
· Accidentally bumping into someone;
· Making other kids play things a certain way/being "bossy";
· A single act of telling a joke about someone;
· Arguments/disagreements; and
· A single act of aggressive behavior, intimidation or meanness.
Prevention and Awareness Raising Strategies:
General Lake staff is trained in strategies of bullying prevention and intervention. All staff recognize that it is their duty to report incidences of bullying and to respond to incidences of bullying as they occur.
All allegations of bullying will be received and taken seriously by the administration. These allegations will be assessed to determine whether they meet the definition of bullying. (In the case where the incident as reported does not meet the definition of bullying, education, discipline or mediation may occur in order to move the parties forward).
When the allegations indicate that bullying has occurred, the bully and relevant witnesses will be interviewed. All relevant evidence will be secured and all information received will be documented.
When the bullying is verified, appropriate measures will be undertaken (up to and possibly including expulsion and/or referral to police) to remediate the situation. Appropriate mitigating factors, nature and severity of the behaviour and impact of the behaviour will be taken into consideration when consequences are determined. Consequences will be consistent with a progressive discipline approach.
In the case of a suspension or expulsion, parents or guardians will receive notification (within 24 hours) and written notification including the reasons for suspension, its duration, details of any program to which the bully is assigned and the right to appeal the decision.

Support Strategies:
When the victim has suffered harm as a result of bullying, parents or guardians will be informed of the nature of the activity that resulted in the harm, the nature of the harm and the steps taken to protect student safety, including the nature of any disciplinary consequences imposed on the student bully. The identity of the bully will not be revealed. In situations where the victim could be harmed by the parent/guardian if disclosure is made, no disclosure will take place. Support will be provided to the student bully according to a progressive discipline approach.
Reporting Requirements:
All employees of the Renfrew County District School Board who become aware that a student may have engaged in an activity for which suspension or expulsion must be considered shall report the matter to the Principal as soon as is reasonably possible.

Communication and Outreach Strategies:
The policies and procedures on bullying prevention and intervention are provided to students, parents, teachers and other school staff.

Monitoring and Review:
The policies and procedures associated with bullying prevention and intervention are monitored and reviewed periodically to evaluate their effectiveness. Anonymous school climate surveys are conducted at least every two years and results are shared with safe school teams (consisting of one student, one parent, one community member, one non-teaching staff member and an administrator) in order to modify school improvement plans as needed.
Peer Mediation Program:
Students are trained in Peer Mediation in order to assist students on the playground which the students have named ‘Yard Patrol’. Peer mediation is both a process where students facilitate resolving disputes between two people or small groups. This process has proven effective in schools changing the way students understand and resolve conflict in their lives. Changes include improved self-esteem, listening and critical thinking skills, and school climate for learning, as well as reduced disciplinary actions and less fights. The process is voluntary for both sides. Peer mediators do not "make decisions" but rather work towards a win-win resolution for both sides in order to avoid further trouble. More serious problems require an office referral and are not appropriate for peer mediation. These include: sexual abuse, assault, suicide, drug use, weapon possession, and those that involve legal problems.
Student Led ‘Bully box’:
Intermediate students introduced this program to assist younger students with their problems on the playground. If students have a problem they can submit their name grade and room number into the box. Intermediate students follow a schedule and pick up the box on their scheduled day. Once the problem is solved the paper is placed in office for review by Administration. Intermediate students have been trained to speak to the students and to help the student find an answer to their problem. In the case of bullying the intermediate students refer the matter to Administration.

Stop Bullying pledge: Bullying makes every day. It makes people feel isolated, unimportant and afraid to go to school. I have the power to stop bullying by getting involved in a few specific ways. Here is my pledge:
I will speak up - I will take a stand when I see young people humiliating or hurting each other. I will talk about bullying with my friends and the adults in my life, so everyone knows I think it's wrong.
I will advocate - I will stick up for others who might be in need of my help, and not just my closest friends.
I will be a role model - I will not use my phone or computer to spread rumors or say hateful things, and I won't ignore it when others are cruel and intimidating.
Stopping bullying begins with me. Taking this pledge can change someone's life in a meaningful way. I will forward it to my friends and family to help grow a community committed to ending bullying. I will speak up.

Reporting a Bullying Incident at School
We do not tolerate bullying and we take bullying incidents seriously by documenting them on report forms and following procedures to eliminate the behaviour and protect our students. Below are sample forms for reporting bullying incidents in our schools.

International Day of Pink - Apr 9, 2014; Apr 8, 2015; Apr 13, 2016
The International Day of Pink is a day of action, created when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. Hundreds of his peers stood up to the bullying and came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and an end to discrimination, gender-bullying and homophobia. General Lake will celebrate a Day of Pink each year to show their commitment to being open minded, understanding of differences and respecting of one another.
Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week
Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. During Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week General Lake students, school staff and parents learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being. Students participate in a number of activities including and not limited to school wide assemblies; performances related to bullying; an anti-bullying survey; student led workshops to explain different forms bullying can take. These include:
· Verbal – name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments
· Physical – hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property
· Social – excluding others from a group or spreading gossip or rumours about them
· Electronic (commonly known as cyberbullying) – spreading rumours and hurtful comments through the use of cellphones, e-mail, text messaging and social networking sites
Safe Schools Team
At the beginning of each year our Safe schools team plans activities and launches initiatives that heighten awareness of bullying and its impact on the school community. This team is working to promote a safer and more welcoming learning environment. Teams include the school principal, a teacher, a student, a parent and a member from the broader community.

The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colours, and masks to vividly portray what bullying is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report and deal with bullying when they see it.

Maria Hawkins: Stop Bullying with the Blues This interactive blues concert, bursting with a positive energy, brings music and black history alive for students. Encouraging more acceptable behaviors and winning attitudes in young learners, Maria uses great music, humor, skits, direct talk and role-play to empower bystanders and victims to take a stand against bullying.

Someone is Bullying You - What Do You Do?
If you are being bullied, you may feel lonely, unhappy, and afraid. You may not want to go to school or outside. Remember that you deserve respect and kindness from others. It's very important to seek help when dealing with a bully. Talk to another adult you trust: a teacher, principal or school counselor. If the bullying is physical or violent, you can ask the adult not to reveal your name.
Below are some tips to help you deal with bullying:
Talk to an adult and tell your parents/guardian as soon as possible.
Ignore bullies. Pretend you didn't hear them. Don't even look at them. Walk right past them if you can. The goal of bullies is to make you upset. Don't give them the satisfaction. Even if you're feeling really hurt, don't let it show. You can talk about or write down your reactions later.
Respond to bullies evenly and firmly. Say "No" or "That's what you think."
If you can, turn a comment into a joke. Example: The bully says, "Stupid outfit!" You say: "Thanks! I'm glad you noticed."
Remove yourself from the situation. Walk away or run if you have to. Go to a place where an adult is present.
Remember that you are not the one with the problem. It's the bully who has the problem.
If you're being called names or teased, imagine that you're inside a huge fish tank filled with white fog. The fog swallows up insults before they reach you. Nothing touches you. Practice by thinking of the worst things a bully can say to you, then letting the fog eat them up.
Keep a journal about bullying incidents and how they make you feel, as well as bullying that happens to other people. Fill a journal with all the things you like about yourself, your plans for the future, etc.
How to Prevent Future Bullying
Don't walk alone. Travel with at least one other person whenever you can.
Avoid unsupervised areas of the school. Make sure you're not alone in the locker room or bathroom.
Avoid places where bullying happens. Take a different route to and from school. Leave a little earlier or later to avoid the bully.
Sit near the bus driver on the school bus or walk with a teacher to classes.
Don't bring expensive things or money to school.
Label your belongings with permanent marker in case they are stolen.
Act confident. Hold your head up, stand up straight, and make eye contact.
Brainstorm bully comebacks ahead of time, and practice them in the mirror. That way you'll have them ready when you need them.
