Seuss filled Extravaganza: A Magniferous Night!

On January 24, 2013 it was a Seuss-filled Extravaganza at General Lake Public School in recognition of Family Literacy Day.  Students came to school in Seuss -inspired costumes during the day, then brought their family out for an evening of fun complete with an Italicious meal, a Book Swap and many Seussical activities.  This special day communicates the important message that reading and learning habits developed at an early age set the stage for our success later in life. Special thanks to the School Council and the General Lake student leaders for all their work organizing a very seussessful, fantabulous, magniferous event.  Pictured above

Beginning September 2013, the Renfrew County District School Board and your school may be offering an extended day program for students up to age 12.  This extended day program will be offered before and after school and is meant to compliment the regular day program.  Because it is offered in the school, it provides a seamless day for students.  For information about this program, please contact your school office or visit www.renfrew.edu.on.ca/extended

Sunday Night Message January 27 2013

A big thank you to our General Lake community for joining in our Seuss-filled Extravaganza.  Special thanks to our School Council for organizing the wonderful meal, as well as all the student leaders who so graciously volunteered their time to run the various stations.  Finally thanks to all of our wonderful parents for coming with their children and demonstrating their commitment to the school and their child's education.  It truly was an inspiring fun-filled event. I am particularly pleased with the generosity of our families in donating the wonderful books for our Book Swap. I know many students were extremely happy with their 'new' reads.

I would like to draw your attention to a wonderful opportunity for parents of children experiencing behavioural challenges.  The PMFRC is offering a free 8 week program called COPE every Wednesday.  Its not too late to register.  More info is on the school blog or you can contact Chris Quigley at 687-2104 ext 224.

Excellence in Teaching and Learning

FAMILY LITERACY DAY
Every year in January, families and communities across Canada celebrate Family Literacy Day. Family literacy refers to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills, from enjoying a story book together at bedtime and during the day, to playing with word games, singing, writing to a relative or friend, sharing day-to-day tasks such as making a shopping list or using a recipe, and surfing the Internet. For more information visit: http://abclifeliteracy.ca/
This year General Lake Public School is having a Dr Seuss inspired evening on January 24, 2013 at 4:30 pm. Among the many fun activities, we will be holding a Book Swap. Books will be available for either the book voucher received at school or purchase for a nominal donation.

Public Speaking at General Lake Public School
Primary, Junior and Intermediate students from General Lake Public School are invited to take part in our annual Public Speaking competition. Primary students selected by teachers will speak in the gym at 12:10 on Feb 14, 2013. Junior/ intermediate students (grade 4-8) selected by teachers will speak in the gym on Feb 13, 2013 at 12:10. Participants may select their own topic or story. Speeches are to be the original work of the speaker. If the primary speaker is retelling a published story or work, this speaker must provide a copy of the original work at the time of the Competition. Complete rules and regulations are available at the school or on the school blog. The top three Contestants in each category will be invited to attend the Royal Canadian Legion contest at Branch 517 on February 17 at 12:30.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
The Renfrew County District School Board welcomes Junior and Senior Kindergarten students to its schools year round, but sets aside dates each February to register Junior and Senior Kindergarten students for the upcoming school year. This year’s February registration period is: January 28 to February 1, 2013 and February 4 to 8, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration is easy.
1. Visit the General Lake Public School office located at the front entrance.
2. Bring with you the following mandatory documents required to register your child: proof of age (birth certificate/birth registration/baptismal), Immunization Records, Ontario Health Card, Lot and Concession Number/Civic Street Address, proof of Ontario residency (Ontario Driver’s Licence/utility bill).
3. Junior Kindergarten children must be 4 years of age by December 31, 2013 and Senior Kindergarten children must be 5 years of age by December 31, 2013 (Junior Kindergarten students who attended in the current school year do not need to re-register for Senior Kindergarten).
General Lake Public School has a full day, everyday Junior and Senior Kindergarten program for both the English and French Immersion streams.
General Panet High School
Grade 8 Information Session
A Grade 8 Information Session is being held for parents and students on Wednesday, January 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at General Panet High School in the entrance to the gymnasium. This is an excellent opportunity for our Grade 8 students to visit the school and help alleviate some of those new school jitters.
Safe, caring and Respectful Environment

Habit of mind for January is Respect
Respect is behaving in a way that shows one cares about one self and others. Some of the ways that a person demonstrates respect include dressing and behaving in a way that show self respect; using manners, being polite and treating others how you expect to be treated; and putting trash and garbage where it belongs. These are only a few of the ways we can all demonstrate respect.
At school everyone is expected to be respectful and to behave in a way that demonstrates respect for each other. It seems simple but it is not always easy to do—especially when one feels angry or frustrated. It is through modeling, learning to identify words for our feelings and developing respectful and acceptable ways to express our feelings that our children learn respectful ways to act.

Holiday Spirit Alive and Well at GLPS
It was standing room only as staff, students, and parents gathered for a good old fashion holiday kitchen party at General Lake Public School on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 1:00pm. Classes delighted the audience with a variety of holiday songs in both French and English. Some Newfoundland mummers even stopped by to teach the students a traditional jig and share a few words. Mummering is a traditional guessing game from small rural out-ports in Newfoundland. People dress up in silly costumes around Christmas and go door to door visiting their friends. The holiday spirit was alive and well at General Lake as staff and students participated in the festive fun.
Wise Use Of Resources

The RCDSB Looks for Input on Name and Colours for New Petawawa school
Have your say in naming Renfrew County’s newest school! The Renfrew County District School Board wants to hear from you. The RCDSB is currently building a new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in Petawawa.
This incredible project is providing a rare opportunity to name a school and choose the school’s colours. The RCDSB is calling on the community, staff, students, employees and alumni to provide suggestions about a name and colours.
Please take a short survey www.surveymonkey.com/s/petschool and share your preference for a school name, its colours and please provide a rationale no more than one page in length. Submissions must reflect the RCDSB mission, vision and values (www.renfrew.edu.on.ca/schoolname). Paper copies of the survey are available at RCDSB schools, Petawawa Town Hall and the Petawawa Library. The survey is available in both English and French.

Welcome Back Winter
Staff on recess supervision always monitor the cold temperatures and the comfort and safety of students. Please dress your children for the weather-hats, mittens, scarves, snow pants and BOOTS! We would encourage you to mark items with your child’s name so we can identify lost items of clothing. General Lake Public School Council www.generallakeschoolcouncil.blogspot.ca The School Council is very happy to take part in the General Lake Seuss –filled Extravaganza on January 24, 2013 at 4:30. We encourage all of our families to come out and enjoy an Italicious meal and an evening of FUN. Just a reminder the meal order form is due Friday January 18th. This is the 15th year of Family Literacy Day in Canada from ABC Literacy Canada. General Lake creates CHANGE

Provide 100,000 people with access to clean water - for life
This year, Free The Children is launching a year-long Water Initiative to provide 100,000 people with access to a permanent source of clean water. We want you to take action!

Why Water?
All of our Adopt a Village pillars are interdependent, but water is the thread that runs throughout -- it allows girls to go to school, and woman to earn a living. It gives families the ability to cook and clean their food safely, and reduces illness in marginalized communities.
We Create Change Video
Interested in finding out how? Visit freethechildren.com/water

We Create Change

1. Take part in We Create Change
Free The Children is embarking on Canada's largest penny drive. Get your penny bag to use throughout your collection. Every bag you fill with pennies is worth $25, enough to provide one person with clean water for life.

Who knew pennies could create so much change?

As a result of this action by ETFO, classes will be cancelled for elementary students and all elementary schools will be closed this Friday, January 11th. We regret to have to inform you of this development.

Sincerely,
