Good Evening Deb Legault with your Sunday Night message from General Lake.
First, On Tuesday, March 26 we have basketball for our grade 6-8 students at 8:15. Later we have our Grade 6-8 Science Fair in the gym beginning at 12:15. Judges will be on hand to evaluate the projects. The winner will be encouraged to enter the Renfrew Regional competition on April 6.
Our Wednesday, March 27th French Club will be cancelled for this week. Jer's Vison will be at General Lake for a special presentation to our junior and intermediate students. At 2:45, parents are welome to join us for our monthly character assembly.
On Tuesday March 26th and Wednesday March 27th some of Borden Ave will be closed due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment assisting in the construction of new residences. Transportation has asked that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic.
There may also be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.
Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from Dundonald Dr are advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days. More details have been posted on the school blog.
On Thursday, March 28 we will have our final basketball club at 8:15. Special thanks to Mme Crouzat who has given her time to providing this opportunity for our students. Later we have our Primary/ Junior Science Fair at 12:15 in the gym. Classes will be given an opportunity to visit the exhibits and, as always, parents are welcome to attend.
Don't forget to return those hot lunch order forms by Thursday, March 28 at the very latest and our Vesey's fundraiser order is due after the Easter break on April 2.
If you are sending in treats during the week please ensure they are clearly marked peanut free. We also encourage to send in healthy snacks as General Lake promotes healthy eating in our school.
.
Enjoy the remainder of your evening.

Aboriginal Experience at General Lake
Staff and students were amazed and astounded as the stage production "Tales from Turtle Island" visited their school on March 7, 2013 to present Aboriginal Experiences. Performers Jason Gullo, Beony John, Stephanie Sarazin and Rhonda Doxtale persented a traditional storytelling theatre and an interactive pow wow dance performance. This experience was brought to the school as part of the school's We Day promise to promote awareness of Aboriginal issues through the 'We Stand Together' initiative. Special thanks to the General Lake School Council and the support of the General Lake Community for bringing this opportunity
Re: Borden Ave closure March 26th 27th
The route the buses will be taking to drop off and pick up students is as follows:
Buses are to turn onto Borden Ave off of Dundonald Dr, once the buses are traveling on Borden Ave they will proceed to the entrance of the first parking lot on the left hand side after the school marked 1820-1834 Borden Ave where there will be a flagman provided by the construction company to help assist the drivers to back into the entrance to turn around for both the morning and afternoon runs. They will then turn right onto Borden and proceed to the Lay-By to drop off and pick-up students. We will notify the bus company of these changes but share this with you if you have any concerns or comments.
We ask that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic. There may be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.
Our recommendations for walkers/ cyclists are as follows:
- Students that are approaching on Borden Ave coming from the direction of Wolfe Ave should be advised that they are to use the entrance into the school yard at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.
- Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from Dundonald Dr are to continue as they normally would but are to be advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days as the buses will be using this portion of Borden Ave to go to and from General Lake P.S.
On March 26th and 27th students will not be able to travel completely around Borden Ave due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment assisting in the construction of new residences.
The construction of the new residences on Borden Ave is an ongoing project, so please expect these changes to be implemented again in the future. If you have any questions or recommendations please do not hesitate to contact the Renfrew County Joint Transportation Consortium.

This year’s Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair is April 5-6, 2013 at the Petawawa Civic Center.
Science/Technology Fairs are a chance for students to work on a project related to some aspect of science, typically an experiment, innovation or study. The students' work is presented at a science fair and the students are evaluated on their scientific thought, originality, understanding, and the exhibit itself.
The best projects in each category are given awards and the best projects in the fair will move on to the Canada Wide Science Fair. This years’ award is an all expense paid trip to the CWSF. Canada-Wide Science Fair 2013 will be held in Lethbridge, Alberta, from May 11-18. If you need further clarification of the rules please send an email to HYPERLINK "mailto:info@rcrsf.ca?subject=Question" info@rcrsf.ca. Registration closes March 31, 2013.
Safe, Respectful, Responsible and Caring Environment
Allergy Sensitive School
Parents are reminded that we have students in the school who have life threatening allergies to all nuts. Please continue to check the ingredients of all food your child brings to school. Thank you for assisting us at the school in our efforts to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all. With your cooperation we can minimize the risk of an allergic reaction.
Anxiety in Children and Strategies
Free information session with Gregory Lubimiv at General Lake PS on February 21st 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Anxiety is the most common disorder of children (and adults) today. It is estimated that 8% to 10% of children suffer from anxiety disorder, but these can increase when stressful events occur. Participants will have a clear understanding of what anxiety is and how it can appear in different forms for different children at different ages. Participants will also be presented with treatment approaches for these children as well as strategies which can be used to decrease anxiety and/or develop greater resilience for children and youth in school and at home.
Habit of Mind for February: Caring
Snow Days
Hot Lunches
In case a snow day falls on hot lunch day, all hot lunches will be postponed until the next regular school day.
Snow Day: Before/After School activities
If a snow day falls on a day with a sporting event or French club day, the event will be cancelled.
Wise Use of Resources
Moving? Posted?
The year is moving quickly and we are beginning preparations for next year. It is important that we know which of our students will be remaining at General Lake Public School and which students are leaving the area. If you are posted, plan to move, or know your child will not be attending General Lake Public School in September please inform the office.
Should your child not be returning to General Lake, it is important to keep your child’s records with you. Most schools require proof of birth, immunization records, recent report card and the name, address and phone number of last school attended.
Public Speaking
February 13th and 14th, General Lake Public School held its school wide Public Speaking Event. Staff, students and parents gathered as students participated in what was an exciting, entertaining and informative 'Speak off'. It was a very close race as the General Lake students demonstrated originality, fluency and a natural sincere manner in delivering their material. Successful candidates are now invited to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion's Public Speaking Event on Sunday Feb 17 at 12:30 at Branch 517. Congratulations to our top contestants in the primary Kaleb Thompson, Kathryne Easter, Alec Lavoie. In the Junior level Bobbi Lavoie, Remi Lavoie, and Abby Jupp. And finally in the intermediate level Fiona MacPherson, Madisenn Walsh and Tiana Ingram. Good luck General Lake.
Seuss Filled Magniferous Literacy Day
On January 24, 2013 it was a Seuss-filled Extravaganza at General Lake Public School in recognition of Family Literacy Day. Students came to school in Seuss -inspired costumes during the day, then brought their family out for an evening of fun complete with an Italicious meal, a Book Swap and many Seussical activities. This special day communicates the important message that reading and learning habits developed at an early age set the stage for our success later in life. Special thanks to the School Council and the General Lake student leaders for all their work organizing a very seussessful, fantabulous, magniferous event.
Jer’s Vision Comes to General Lake
Jer's Vision is a leader in anti-bullying and anti-discrimination programming. They are a youth led organization that is making a real difference in the communities they work in.
This organization looks at diversity inclusively, this means they look at all forms of discrimination. They are also unique because their programming reaches out not just to the marginalized/minority populations, but also to the general population, thereby engaging them in taking a proactive role in preventing discrimination by promoting diversity themselves.
General Lake is pleased to announce that Jer’s Vision will run a program with our junior and intermediate students on February 21, 2013. More information about the program can be found at HYPERLINK "http://www.jersvision.org" www.jersvision.org.

That’s why, on Monday, February 18, 2013 –on the third Monday of February, Ontarians celebrate Family Day. This public holiday is a special day designed to spend some quality time with your family. We hope that you have made this day a special one for your family.
A Message From the School Council
http://www.generallakeschoolcouncil.blogspot.ca/
The General Lake School Council would like to thank our parents for their participation in our Family Literacy Italicious dinner on January 24th. The evening was a great success because of your positive response. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent volunteer: Adelle Beminster, Lindsay Allan, Guylaine Lapierre, Lori Lavoie, and Sarah Perras for their precious assistance in making this event run smoothly. The School Council was able to offer this Italian meal at a low price because of the support of Moncion's in our Literacy evening and because of your Moncion's Receipts. On February 13th and 14th, General Lake Public School held its school wide Public Speaking Event.

Sunday night message from General Lake Public School
For those students that missed their pizza because of the snow day on Friday, pizza will be available tomorrow Mon, Feb 11. In the future all hot lunches will be postponed on Snow Days until the next school day. Thanks to Mme Major for all her hard work on Friday re-organizing and delivering the hot lunch.
An exciting week at General Lake with our Public Speaking events. On Wednesday, the Junior Intermediate selected students will participate in our school-wide event at 12:15 in the gymnasium. On Thursday the selected Primary students will participate at 12:15 . As always our General Lake parents are welcome to attend these exciting events. Successful candidates will then be invited to the Legion on the Sun, Feb 17 at 12:30 for their speech contest.
This week, to mark 'Love the Bus' month, students bused to General Lake P.S. are encouraged to show their appreciation to all of our bus drivers who deliver our children safely to and from school. Please take some time at home to review the safety rules which include sitting quietly in their seat; listening to the drivers instructions; as well as not engaging in behaviour that could distract the drivers attention from the road. Also we encourage all of the students to say a little thank you to their driver for the extremely important job they do.
Also this week we will continue with our musical salute in honour of Black history month. Various artists music is featured each morning over the PA with a brief description of the historical contributions that have shaped today's music around the world.
So mark your calendars:
