Sunday Night Update October 28

Mon Day 3
Tues Day 4
Wed Day 5
Thurs Day 1
Fri Day 2
Good evening. Deb Legault here with your Sunday Night update from General Lake Public School. A big thank you to staff, students, and parents for their tremendous support this past week. As many know, I was away with a family emergency and I really appreciate how smoothly things ran in my absence.
I would like to give one last reminder that Free The Children's Craig Keilburger is coming to Pembroke next week Nov 2 at our Annual Parent Engagement Symposium. Craig Keilburger is the founder of the We movement, one that drives many of our General Lake's initiatives .  I invite all parents to bring their children out to hear him speak.   Registration is on the Board website and it is due tomorrow. Even if you cannot attend the workshops later in the day, I encourage you to come out.
Its a great week to be at Lake with an exciting week of events. Beginning on Monday Day 3Mme MacPhee Grade 4/5 and Mrs  Fergusons Grade 4/5 classes will be going to Huglis for a field trip. Please dress students appropriately for the weather.
On Mon, Wed, and Fri at 8:30 Intermediate students have volleyball practice in the gym.
On Tuesday October 29 the Remembrance Day Posters are due to Mme Robillard
On Wednesday we have an extremely busy day. First it is the last day for our 'WE Starve Hunger' Food Drive. Please check out those cupboards and give generously. It looks like this will be our most successful drive yet.
The intermediate students will be performing plays for the classes throughout the day.
At 12:15 we have two guest speakers, Brampton wrestler Ohenewa Akuffo and Tim Gerritts from the Right to Play program. They will be speaking with our Grade 3-8 students about the importance of sport and keeping physically fit.
Halloween Celebrations will take place from 1-2 with alternative activities provided to accommodate all students.
Spookygrams will be delivered the last nutrition break. Its not to late to get your Spookygrams. Mrs Marquardt's class will be accepting orders on Monday. Order form is located on the Blog.
It is black and orange spirit day and I have left it up to individual teachers whether they permit costumes.  If you are sending costumes, please ensure they don't have toy weapons and masks are only to be worn during appropriate class times.
On Friday we have our character assembly for Optimism from 1-2:00. As always parents are welcome to attend any of our presentations in the gym.
Registration is due this week  for our Annual Gift and Craft show tentatively booked for  Nov 16. If you are interested please contact a member of our School Council or myself for more information.
One final opportunity for our Grade 7-8 students: The legislative Assembly is taking applications for  Pages. More info is located on the blog about this exciting opportunity. Please contact me at school if you are interested and fulfill the qualifications.
Have a great week everyone.

Legislative Page Program for Grade 7-8 students

Legislative Page program for Grade 7-8 students-Applications Due November 15

Each year approximately 140 young students from across Ontario are selected to participate in the Legislative Page Program.  This is a unique educational experience open to all Ontario students enrolled in grades 7 or 8, and provides an opportunity to work in the Legislative Chamber as well as explore the history and traditions of the Legislative Assembly.
The Program is designed for outgoing, high-achieving, community-involved students who have demonstrated responsibility and leadership.  Legislative Pages experience the provincial legislature in action, meet key parliamentary and political figures, and learn first-hand about Ontario’s Parliament and legislative process.  They also have the opportunity to forge new lifelong friendships with peers from all over Ontario.
The Page Program is only offered when the provincial legislature is in session, usually from mid-February until early June and from early September until mid-December.
Selected students are granted a leave of absence from their school to serve their term of duty as Pages.  While at Queen’s Park, Pages are under the direction of the Page Program Coordinator who is a certified Ontario teacher.  Pages receive an honorarium of $15.00 per day during their term of duty.

Detour Oct 22-Nov 1

This is an important message from General Lake Public School regarding transportation. From Tuesday October 22nd to Friday Nov 1st parents will not be able to drop off or pick up students in front of the school, or in the staff parking lot.   Instead, please use the entrance at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave accessed off Wolfe Ave.  Parents of Kindergarten students are asked to park and walk their child through the school yard to the front kinder area to ensure their safe arrival.

The buses will be using the current staff parking lot as their turn around.  Staff will be parking on the other side of the school.

We would also like to advise parents that there may be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon due to construction delays.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Delays due to Closure of Borden Ave

Due to the closure of Borden Ave to assist in the installation of water and sewer for the new residences in this area Tier 2 buses will not be able to access General Lake Public School lay-by effective October 22, 2013  - November 1st   for pick-up and drop-off.

The route the buses will be taking to drop off and pick up students is as follows:

Vehicles will need to access General Lake P.S. by turning onto Borden Ave off of Dundonald Dr. Once the vehicles are traveling on Borden Ave they will proceed to 2080 Borden Ave where they will make a left hand turn at the parking lot entrance onto a gravel road  provided by the construction company connecting the PMQ lot and the teacher parking lot (a flag-man will be provided to assist in this detour).  The gravel section of the detour will be in effect for an estimate of two days and then the drivers will be able to enter the teacher’s parking lot via the paved entrance until the end of construction. They will proceed into the teachers parking lot (which will be kept clear of parked vehicles) and drop off students at the school (where a staff member will be waiting) and then turn around in the lot.

We ask that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic that they instead use the entrance at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave accessed off Wolfe Ave.  We also ask that you advise parents and guardians that there may be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.

Our recommendations for walkers/ cyclists are as follows:

  • Students that are approaching on Borden Ave coming from the direction of Wolfe Ave should be             advised that they are to use the entrance into the school yard at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.
  • Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from Dundonald Dr are to enter the school via the teachers parking lot and are advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days as the buses will be using this portion of Borden Ave to go to and from General Lake P.S.  Please advise parents they may want to consider supervising walker/bikers on these days as there will be a lot of heavy equipment and a big hole where they would normally cross.

OPERATION SNOWSUIT AT GENERAL LAKE

Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network
c/o The Phoenix Centre for Children and Families
130 Pembroke Street West, Pembroke, ON, K8A 5M8
Phone: (613)735-2374 Fax: (613)735-2378
October 2013
Dear Parent/Guardian,
My name is Lyn Smith, Coordinator of Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN).
For the past few years CPAN has run a snowsuit and footwear campaign called Operation Snowsuit, the goal of this campaign is to ensure that every child living in our community has appropriate clothing and footwear for our severe Canadian winter. We are starting the 2013 campaign as the weather is already turning cool and we want to be ready before the cold weather hits. We are asking for your help to reach this goal.
Starting immediately your school will be collecting new and/or gently used snowsuits and footwear on behalf of CPAN. Please take this opportunity to check your closets and donate any snowsuits and/or boots that your child (or children) may have outgrown. Please note: These must be clean and in good repair as CPAN does not have facilities or the manpower to clean or repair these items. We are always very short of snow pants and larger snowsuits boots etc. (men’s and ladies sizes) as our youth also enjoy being warm and dry. New items and/or cash donations are also very gratefully received.
If you or someone you know is in need help please feel free to call, CPAN can be reached at 613-735-2374 ex 250. Please leave a detailed message. We will need to know: your name and a phone number where you can be reached, the name of the child in need including their snowsuit and boot size and gender of your child/children (we wouldn’t want to give a girls snowsuit to a boy and vice-versa). We have already started taking requests.
Since this program started we have been able to keep hundreds of children warm and dry, we have always been able to fill each and every request. Last winter we helped 339 children and youth (these included children who had not yet been born, up to 18 year olds). Any help that you can provide is gratefully appreciated, and I would like to thank you in advance for your time, and for any support you may give to this very worthy cause.
Yours truly,
Lyn Smith, Coordinator
