Road CLosure May 28 and May 29

Re: Borden Ave closure May 28th and 29th

Due to the presence of a crane and other heavy construction equipment on Borden Ave to assist in the construction of new residences in this area Tier 2 buses will not be able to travel around Borden Ave on May 28th in the PM and May 29th in the AM  to access General Lake Public School as it will be closed on those days.
The route the buses will be taking to drop off and pick up students is as follows:
Vehicles will now need to access General Lake P.S. by turning onto Borden Ave off of Dundonald Dr. Once the vehicles are traveling on Borden Ave they will proceed to the flag man who will then assist them making the 3 point turn by with backing into the gravel turnaround provided by the construction company on the right hand side of Borden Ave. They will then proceed to the Lay-By to drop off and pick-up students as normal.
We ask that parents not drive on Borden Ave in front of the school to either drop off or pick their kids up on these days given the increase in bus traffic that they instead use the entrance at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.  We also ask that you advise parents and guardians that there may be a slight delay in drop off times in the afternoon for all students getting bused from General Lake P.S. due to the detour on the dates specified.

Our recommendations for walkers/ cyclists are as follows:
  • Students that are approaching on Borden Ave coming from the direction of Wolfe Ave should be             advised that they are to use the entrance into the school yard at the back of the school by the play structure and parking lot numbered 1690-1711 Borden Ave.
  • Students that are coming onto Borden Ave from Dundonald Dr are to continue as they normally would but are to be advised to use extra caution as there will be more bus traffic on these days as the buses will be using this portion of Borden Ave to go to and from General Lake P.S.

This should be the last detour for this school year. We thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Sincerely,
Natasha Schroeder

Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The EQAO Primary and Junior Provincial Assessment is a series of standardised tests of Reading, Writing and Mathematics administered to grade three and six students and will be held at General Lake the week of May 27th to June 7th.  Our students have been working hard to prepare for these tests and we know they are going to do their very best.  Please try to avoid scheduling appointments or holidays during this time, as it is essential that all grade three and six students be at school on the testing days.

Safe, Caring and Respectful Environment

Friends For Life Program at General Lake

Students in Mrs. Ferguson's and Mme Malette's 4/5 classes at General Lake Public School are pleased to announce they have completed the 10 week 'Friends for Life' program facilitated by the PMFRC.  This program focuses on personal development skills and promotes self-esteem, problem solving skills, psychological resilience, self-expression, and building positive relationships with peers and adults. It is a positive, fun, learning experience. Students in both classes combined on the last day to celebrate with some playground games, some bubbles and some healthy snacks.  The word ‘Friends’ represents the following acronym: F is for feeling; R is to remember to relax; I is for I can do my best; E is to explore solutions and coping plans; N is for now reward yourself and be proud of your accomplishments; D stands for don't forget to practice every day (so that it comes naturally when you need it); and finally S is to remember to smile for life and to stay calm.
A Wise Use of Resources
We continue to accept registration for Kindergarten in September.  Our French Immersion program is open to all students in the Petawawa area.

It is also important that we know which of our students will be remaining at General Lake and which students are leaving the area.  Please call the school at 687-2404 to notify us if you are posted, plan to move, or your child will no longer be attending General Lake in September.

Habit of Mind for May is
Courage
“If we're growing, we're always going to be out of our comfort zone and have the courage to be there.

We are the Change!
Twelve General Lake students were invited to WE Day held Monday, April 29 at the Robert Guertin Centre in Gatineau, Que.
You can't buy a ticket to this event, you have to earn one by doing good in your community and globally (www.weday.com and www.freethechildren.com). It was the 25th WE Day event and the first one to be held in the Ottawa area. It was filled with many inspirational speakers and performers.  MuchMusic VJ Jesse Giddings was the MC.  Actor and America's Favourite President Martin Sheen spoke of why he is an activist.  Free the Children and WE Day founders Marc and Craig Kielburger got the audience of around five thousand students and educators fired up about doing good in their community and globally. Spencer West and Molly Burke told their stories of overcoming adversity.  Performers Shawn Desmond, Neverest, My Name is Kay, Kardinal Offishall, Cirque du Soleil, Karl Wolf and Tyler Shaw kept the audience entertained while the cast of Degrassi shared their inspirational experiences from their humanitarian trip to Africa.  Students have been inspired to create their own mini we-day here at General Lake this June. More details to follow.

Destination Imagination Mini Olympics
Students from Kindergarten to grade 8 were divided into teams on Friday, May 10th to participate in three instant Destination Imagination challenges as part of the Education Week activities at General Lake. Under the direction of Mr. Blimkie and DI Representative Doug Hunter students participated in these fun challenges designed to promote problem solving, team building, and cooperation.

Education Week: Bucket Filling Fun
May 6-10 Ontario celebrated Education Week with the theme "Moving from great to excellent in education".
General Lake partnered up with the Phoenix Centre and the Renfrew County Public Health Unit to move to excellence by creating awareness for mental health issues. General Lake focused on creating a positive sense of being through a school wide bucket filling activity.  Based on the book called "Have you filled my bucket?” students and staff nominated people who have 'filled their imaginary buckets' through thoughtful words and deeds.  Bucket fillers are displayed prominently on our front bulletin board and names are read daily.  This activity will continue for the next few weeks.  Throughout the week the daily announcements also focused on the stigma attached to having mental health issues and the importance of breaking down those barriers.  On Tuesday evening, the Director of the Phoenix Centre, Mr. Greg Lubimiv, was on hand to discuss ‘Goodness of Fit’ and the importance of being in tune with our children’s temperamental traits.

Earth Day Challenges
On April 22, students at General Lake took part in Mrs. Slepica-Stewart’s school-wide litterless lunch challenge.  Students were encouraged to bring in items in re-usuable containers and bring home food remnants for composting.  The General Lake custodians were very pleased to report that the students had reduced the daily garbage by about 50%.  Also, as part of our environmental activities, students demonstrated creativity and innovative designs in our Recycled Creation Contest.  Tied for first place was Claire Bemister with her Recycled Picture entitled ‘Sun Breeze’ and Persaea Perras ‘Bird feeder’.  In second place was Skye Crouzat’s ‘Self watering pansies’.  Honorable mention goes to Genevieve MacKay and Juliann Valera’s ‘Water bottle Flower’, Taylor Legault’s ‘Flower pot’, Sophia Easter’s ‘Gold Creation’ and Kalee Granter’s ‘Hanger’.

Grade 8 Badminton Team Makes Us Proud!
Congratulations goes out to the Grade 8 badminton team.  Kyle Lambert and Wyatt Shamess, Daryl Sullivan and Kim Jones, Maddy Walsh and Katie Hambleton, Dominic Plamondon and Sydney Robinson , Brianna Pomeroy and Caynen Kyle, Taylor Sullivan, Erin Stacey, Liam Jobe, Jada McInnis and Katelyn Ransom. Their determination was outstanding considering the team only had two weeks to practice.  All their hard work paid off.  They represented General Lake with pride.  They showed great sportsmanship.  They should be very happy with their successes and accomplishments.

Vesey Bulb Top Sellers
Congratulations to our top sellers for the Vesey Bulb Fundraiser.  Joslyn Exham came in first place selling $183.00.  Kalee Granter came in second selling $166.00, followed closely by Liam Tobin with a whopping $161.00.  These students received a voucher for our Scholastic book fair compliments of the General Lake School Council.

The Spring Book Fair a Success!!
Thank you everyone for coming to our book fair.   Special Thank You to our Parent Volunteers, whose hard work and dedication made the book fair possible:  Claudia Major, Lorri Costello-Lavoie, Molly Dempsey, Jen Gerroir, Sarah Perras, Angela MacKay, Lindsay Allan and Karen White.  Finally congratulations to Faith MacKay who won the Scholastic Book Fair Family draw and books for her classroom.
