November 18 Sunday Night Message
Good evening. Deb Legault here with the Sunday Night Message. A big week at General Lake with our National Bullying Awareness Week. Announcements and posters will be prominent in the school as we 'Keep Calm and Stop bullies'. On Wednesday grade 7/8 leaders will visit K-6 classes to talk about what bullying is and how together we can all play a part in stopping it.
A reminder from the School Council you can access our parent volunteer form on the blog. If you are interested in volunteering in our school we would love to hear from you. Thanks to all who have already indicated their interests.
This month's character trait is initiative. One of our Grade 5 students, Maya, is demonstrating initiative by collecting cans and canned tabs for Cancer . A box is located at the front entrance to deposit your crushed cans and a large container is on the table to deposit your can tabs.
You are invited to a public viewing of the Festival of Trees this weekend located at the Petawawa Civic Centre where you can take a stroll down Christmas Tree Avenue and view the beautifully decorated trees and wreathes sponsored by generous local businesses and organizations. Free admissions, but donations gratefully accepted. All proceeds to CPAN to help local children in need. Finally our Lost and Found is bursting at the seams. Please make a point to stop by the front entrance of the school and check out some of the items.
Here are the events for this week:
Monday grade 8's career education workshop
Tuesday Grade 7/8 to We day in Montreal. We leave at 4:00 am.

Get Involved
Dear Parents / Guardians
Welcome to another exciting year at General Lake filled with many opportunities. We have a variety of ways for you to help and will do our best to find a place for all levels of commitment. If you can offer an hour a week, an hour a month, or an hour a year we want everyone to know that any time you give to the school is important, needed and appreciated. You are a vital part of the School Council here at General Lake.
Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the most important factors in raising student self- esteem and academic achievement. We realize, however, that each of our families is unique – with its own priorities, needs, talents, and time constraints – and so we would like to try to provide as many different kinds opportunities for parental involvement as possible. Please review the volunteer opportunities suggested below, and check any you are interested in – or tell us what you would like to do. Then return the form to the school.

Bullying Awareness
and Prevention Week – November 19-24, 2012
We can all stop
it!
Ontario has designated the week
beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention
Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment.
During– General Lake students will be involved in various activities to promote
awareness of bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being. Bullying is
defined as a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at
an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to
cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings,
self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real
or perceived power imbalance. There are different forms of bullying
including Physical, Verbal, Social and
Electronic (commonly known as cyberbullying).
Throughout the week Grade 7/8 students will lead a presentation in the classes
about bullying. Students in Grade 3-8
will participate in a survey to help us identify if, when, where, and who is
being bullied. Results of this survey
will be compared to the survey done in 2011-2012 and reported back to the
School Council. On Thursday, Nov 23 at
1:00 pm we will have an assembly where some players from the Lumber Kings are
expected to speak up about the problem of bullying. During the assembly, students will talk about
what a person can do if they are bullied or if they see someone else being
bullied. The theme of the event for
General Lake will be that we all need to stay
calm and stop bullies. It is a problem that only together we can work to solve.
WE SCARE HUNGER
Hunger is a daily reality for
millions of people, even in our own backyard. This October, General Lake Public
School took action to collect food for St. Joseph’s food bank as part of the
“We Scare Hunger” initiative from ‘Free
The Children’. Students brought in 484
non-perishable food items to help those in need. More information about the We Scare Hunger
program is available at:
www.freethechildren.com/wescarehunger.
Thank
you to all the students from General Lake
and their families who are putting the care back in scare.

SPCA Penny Drive
Under the leadership of a Grade
5 student Chloe Crouzat, General Lake Public School recently held a Penny Dive
in support of the local SPCA. With the federal
government’s recent decision to phase the penny out of existence, Chloe asked
our General Lake community to collect pennies, and donate them to help injured,
abused and homeless animals in the shelter.
A large jar was collected and delivered to the SPCA at the end of
October. Chloe received an initiative
award for her work at our October Character assembly.
