Sunday Night Message Oct 28

Good Evening. Deb Legault here with your Sunday Night update.  Another busy week at General Lake.
We are wrapping up our Penny Drive for the SPCA.
Posters, poems and essays are due for the Legion's annual Remembrance Day contest.  All entries must be accompanied by a permission form available at my office.
'We Scare Hunger' food drive will end on Wednesday.  Please send along all non-perishables for spirit points.  We hope to get the food counted and picked up by Friday.
CPAN's Operation Snowsuit has just begun.  Please send along all gently used suits. The goal of Operation Snowsuit is to provide outdoor winter wear that will enable all children to participate in all outdoor activities, regardless of their family’s financial status.  A collection box is available in our front lobby.
Online registration is now open for the Annual Pic Symposium at Fellowes High School on Nov 3 with Elizabeth Manley.  Come on out,  show your support and get some valuable information on mental illness, anxiety, yoga and other topics. The event is free and childcare, light breakfast, and lunch are provided.  See the blog for more information about the wonderful workshops available.
Finally, General Lake is holding a Craft show on Nov 17 and we are looking for vendors.  If you are interested in having a table the cost is $30.00 and you can sign up this week on a first come, first serve basis.  Check the blog for various dates and times to sign up this week.
As for this week, mark your calendar;
On Tuesday October 30 is photo retake day, as well as some missed group photos.  We will also be having our Cross Country Run at 8:30.
Wednesday, Oct 31 is our Black and Orange Spirit day or depending on the class your child may be asked to bring in a costume.  Students should check with their teacher first. Many classes will be holding special Halloween parties.  Please ensure that all food sent into the school is clearly marked with peanut free on the packaging.  We want to ensure safety for all our students taking part in celebrations.
Thursday, Nov 1,  weather permitting, we will hold another Cross Country Run at 8:30
Friday, Nov 2 is our Character Assembly about Optimism, as well as our Pizza Lunch.

SUNDAY MESSAGE-Oct 21

Good evening, Deb Legault here with your update from General Lake. There are lots of events and announcements again this week.  If you prefer you can also read this announcement on our school blog at  www.generallakenews.blogspot.com

Cold weather is on its way. Please remember to dress your child in layers.  It is often cold in the morning, but as the day goes on it get warmer.

Also our lost and found is already bursting at the seams.  Take some time to check out the numerous items.  If its lost, it just could be here. Lost and Found is located in our front entrance.

We Scare Hunger is in full swing with our food drive.  Keep those non perishables coming in for Spirit Points. Students may also wish to trick or treat for canned food items on Halloween Night.  If your child is interested in doing this, I have posted  a link to the Free the Children website for more information on our blog.  Students interested in trick or treating for canned goods, should deliver a notice, which is included on the blog or available at my office to the targeted houses, prior to Halloween night.  It is good to prepare people in advance if your child will be asking for food donation instead of candy so they have some canned goods available.

Also our Remembrance Day contest has begun.  Students can enter posters, poems or essays. I do need  a form filled out and signed by parents to enter the  Legion;s contest.  Forms are available at my office or on the blog. I would like to have all entries in by Friday, October 26.

Tuesday and Thursday will be our Cross Country Run at 8:30 am.

Our Gift and Craft Show committee meeting is on Thursday October 25th at 6:00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.  The date for the Gift and Craft show has been set for Nov 17th.

Pita lunch on Friday.

Also a special reminder to Mme Bernardin's class only. They have a trip tomorrow to the Power of You fitness centre for a workout.  Mme asked me to remind students to bring indoor running shoes, and to wear comfortable workout clothing for the trip.  The trip will take place rain or shine.

Registrations will be open on Monday for the PIC Symposium on Nov 3.  There is lots of interesting workshops including yoga, Free the Children, anxiety and children, destination imagination, and many more along with keynote speaker Elizabeth Manley speaking on Mental illness.  I look forward to seeing many of our General Lake families there for what is sure to be a informative event.  Childcare, light breakfast and lunch are provided free of charge. Register early to ensure availability of choices.

Finally we would like to give a big THANK YOU to everyone for their support in our Fall Fundraiser. With your support we sold $12,700.  Remember  55% of this amount comes back to our school, so we were able to raise a whopping $6985.00 GOOD JOB EVERYONE....
Thanks for your ongoing support and help making General Lake such a great place to be.
Have a wonderful week

The following is a list of workshop choices available after our keynote speaker. Please Visit http://pic.renfrew.edu.on.ca to select your preferred session. Register early to ensure availability of choice.

 WORKSHOPS – Morning Session (10:45 – 11:45 AM)
“Destination Imagination” – Doug Hunter, Regional Director of Destination Imagination
Acquiring "21st Century Skills" is the key to today's students' education. Doug will overview what these skills are and why they are important to Canada's future. In addition, attendees will also enjoy participating in teams of 5-7 in solving "Instant Challenges" to get a first hand feel for this learning process. Destination Imagination is a non-profit global organization that provides in school and after school educational programs for students to learn "21st Century Skills" (creativity, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking). The program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and service learning. The participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the creative problem solving process. Participants gain more than just basic knowledge and skills - they learn to unleash their imagination and take unique approaches to problem solving. This program is just starting up this fall at the Ottawa Catholic Board and the Renfrew County Board.
"Challenging Parent: Yesterday versus Today" – Gregory Lubimiv, The Phoenix Centre
Is parenting more challenging today than 30 years ago? Certainly parenting has always been a difficult journey, but it does seem that there are some current day realities which add to the stress. This workshop will go through the challenges of parenting today and what some of the current stresses are that can become barriers to successful parenting. As well, there will be a presentation of tools, strategies and approaches to parenting to provide children with the best chances to be successful at school and in life.
“Essencia Spa & Yoga” – Rebecca Bloomfield, Essencia Spa & Yoga
Join us and experience the benefits of yoga on health and how it can help with stress reduction. (45 minutes)
“Numeracy” – Lynn Denault & Tracy Joyce, RCCDSB and Jackie Stadnyk & Tricia Robinson, RCDSB
Students need a solid understanding of 5 and 10 in the early years if they are to understand and be able to work with larger numbers later on. We know that older children often continue to struggle with these "basics" in Grade 4 and beyond. Learn some easy and practical ideas that you can use to support your child's learning in this area.
“Homework Help, eLearning, OERB Resources” – Katie Long, RCDSB
It can be challenging to find high quality and relevant resources to support your children with their homework or to support what they are learning in their classes. The Ontario Educational Resource Bank has over 28,000 resources linked directly to the Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum. Homework Help provides free online tutoring and other resources to support students in grade 7 to 10 Math. OSAPAC provides software and online resources to support students of all ages. This workshop will introduce you to these great online resources, which are all part of the Ministry of Education's Digital Learning Initiative, and show you how to access them to help support your children and their learning.
WORKSHOPS – Afternoon Session (12:45 –1:45 PM)
“Free the Children” – Free the Children
Empowering Youth to Change the World - This workshop will walk through Free the Children's empowerment model to help you Educate, Engage and Empower youth, no matter what their age. You will leave this workshop feeling inspired and equipped with the tools to help your children build empathy and make a positive impact in their local and global communities.
“Anxiety in Children” – Gregory Lubimiv, The Phoenix Centre
Anxiety is the most common disorder of children (and adults today). It is estimated that 8% to 10% of children suffer from anxiety disorder, but these can increase when stressful events occur. Anxiety can be difficult to assess as it may result in symptoms that look more like ADHD, oppositional behaviour, or acting out behaviours. Participants will have a clear understanding of what anxiety is and how it can appear in different forms for different children at different ages. Participants will also be presented with treatment approaches for these children as well as strategies which can be used to decrease anxiety and/or develop greater resilience for children and youth in school and at home.
“Collaborative Problem Solving” – Natasha McRoberts, Crossroads Children’s Centre
Natasha McRoberts, child and family therapist from Crossroads Children's Centre in Ottawa will be leading the workshop on Collaborative Problem Solving. Collaborative Problem Solving, developed by Ross Greene, focuses on how adults interact with children/youth to manage their behaviour. It's based to on Greene's theory that "Children will do well if they can." If they can't do well we need to figure out what's getting in the way so we can help.
“Restorative Practices” – Jody Kitson-Roy, RCDSB
Restorative Practices are built upon Aboriginal justice practices and community circles. Many schools are using Restorative Practices to repair harm done after relationships have been damaged. Restorative Practices encourage ownership of behaviour and working towards repairing the harm. Focused questions such as What happened? What were you thinking at the time? and What have you been thinking since? replace accusation and blame. The approach focuses on personal accountability and repairing relationships. There are many uses for Restorative Circles such as conflict resolution and community building.
“Homework Help, eLearning, OERB Resources” – Katie Long, RCDSB
It can be challenging to find high quality and relevant resources to support your children with their homework or to support what they are learning in their classes. Our goal is 1350 pounds of food.
This project is part of our commitment to Free the Children and thinking ME TO WE!
Please donate generously to scare away hunger!

sunday message OCT 14

Good evening. Deb Legault with your update from  General Lake Public School for this week.

It's a busy week beginning with our  food drive 'We Scare Hunger', formally known as Halloween for Hunger.   It is part of our local initiative on our action plan for Free the Children.  Students can bring in cans for school spirit points.  Canned foods are then placed in bin in the front of the school.  Students can also be part of this initiative by trick or treating for cans on Halloween night. An information package will go home with interested students this week. All cans to be donated to a local food bank.

On Monday, Oct 15 all LaMontagne orders are due. Student verification forms are also due so we can update our records with emergency contacts.  If there are not any changes, please indicate this on the form.   Students may also wish to wear hot pink or blue to promote awareness for the harmful effects of cyber-bullying.

On Tuesday Oct 16 Our Cross Country run will be cancelled, as I will be away.  We will be back on Thursday in full force striving for our personal best.

On Thursday Oct 17 all photo orders are due to the office.

On Friday, Oct 18  it is our hot lunch pizza.  It's a crazy week, so lets end the week with a crazy hair spirit day.

Under the initiative of one of our Grade 5 students, we are holding a penny drive until December to support the work of the SPCA. Send those pennies along.  A collection jar is available in the front entrance.

Also mark calendars for Nov 3 as the Parent Involvement Committee presents their annual PIC Symposium at Fellowes High School from 9-3.  Special guest this year is Olympic medal winner Elizabeth Manley, who speaks out on her struggles with mental illness.   Free childcare, light breakfast and lunch is provided as well as workshops on destination imagination, free the children, collaborative problem solving and wellness and alternative stress management.  I hope everyone can try to make it out to this wonderful and informative event.  More information will be sent out shortly about registration.

A Volunteer form went home on Friday outlining some of the opportunities available for our parent community. If you can offer any time to help in our school coaching teams, teaching chess, supporting us in any of the ways outlined on the form, or if you have an idea of your own, please return the form by Friday. We would love to have your help.

Finally mark your calendar for Nov 17 for our Craft and Gift show.  More details to follow.
Thank you and enjoy the rest of your evening.

Get Involved

Dear Parents / Guardians
Welcome to another exciting year at General Lake filled with many opportunities. We have a variety of ways for you to help and will do our best to find a place for all levels of commitment. If you can offer an hour a week, an hour a month, or an hour a year we want everyone to know that any time you give to the school is important, needed and appreciated. You are a vital part of the School Council here at General Lake.
Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the most important factors in raising student self- esteem and academic achievement. We realize, however, that each of our families is unique – with its own priorities, needs, talents, and time constraints – and so we would like to try to provide as many different kinds opportunities for parental involvement as possible. Please review the volunteer opportunities suggested below, and check any you are interested in – or tell us what you would like to do. Then return the form to the school.

Safe, Respectful, Responsible and Caring Environment

Every year we follow a number of strategies designed to keep our students safe.  For example we have three fire drills before Christmas and three fire drills after March Break.  The whole school will be starting to practice the fire drills.  We also have a “Lockdown” practice twice a year.  During this time teachers are directed to “secure their classes”.  The children sit on the floor, the doors are locked and every one has to be silent until administration announces “all clear” and we go back to our normal routines.  Fire drills and lockdowns are part of our normal safety precautions and have been part of our routine for several years. Policies such as limiting access to the school through the front entrance and not allowing adults other than staff in the yard are also part of our concern for the safety of our students.

General Lake's 2012-2013 School Council

Treasurer: Adelle Bemister

Congratulations to the candidates. It’s going to be an amazing year.

Visitor’s Protocol
As a safety precaution, and to avoid the disruption and interruption of the learning environment, we will continue to follow the protocol below for all visitors to the school, including parents.
·        All visitors must report to the office. Visitors who need to go beyond the office into the school population will be given identification badges to wear and will be required to sign the visitor’s log and indicate the reason for the visit.
·        Parents picking up children at the school will be asked to wait at the office, lobby area, or outside where students exit.
·        Appointments to visit a classroom or meet a teacher should be made ahead of time at a mutually agreeable time.
·        Entrances, except the main entrance will be locked at all times.

Pumpkins...a Vegetable Worth Knowing!
We often think of pumpkins as Halloween decorations… but pumpkins are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals. Regardless if it is the seed or the pulp, pumpkins offer great health benefits:
High in antioxidants: prevents cataracts in the eyes and protects eye tissue.
Excellent Source of Vitamin A: important for normal vision and healthy growth; protects immune function.
Also contains vitamins C and E and minerals magnesium, potassium and zinc.
The seeds are excellent source of dietary fibre and unsaturated fatty acids.
Can be baked, stewed, or steamed. You can purée the pumpkin when cooked and add to muffins, pancakes, sweet breads, and cookies.

Food Drive at General Lake
Hunger is the most extreme form of poverty where individuals and families cannot meet their most basic need for food. In an effort to think globally and act locally through our Free the Children We day promise, General Lake Public School has joined this worldwide effort to alleviate hunger and to support our local food banks. Throughout the month of October, students from General Lake Public School are encouraged to bring in non perishable and canned goods. The Halloween for Hunger food campaign gathers community efforts and strengthens the capacity of local food banks. Together we can make a difference. Thanks for your support.

The Scholastic Book Fair
…is coming to our school the week of November 12th. What better way to promote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event.  We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and greatest in children’s books. Did you know that every $10.00 you spend at the Fair up to $6.00 goes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital fundraiser is key to our obtaining new books and resources for our library and classrooms.
You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Watch for the book flyer that provides a few of the many books available to purchase at our Fair.
The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit at the fair. You could win $50 in books -$25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom!

Student Verification Forms
Your child’s student verification form has been sent home.  We would ask that you kindly review the emergency contacts listed on the form and make any necessary changes.  The office requests that all forms be returned by October 15, 2012 so we can update our records.  If no changes are needed, please indicate that on the form as you are returning it.

School Council News
The School Council would like to thank parents and students, for attending our Open House on September 13th. We hope you enjoyed meeting our wonderful staff and did get a chance to meet with some of our Community Partners while sharing a meal with other families. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent volunteers: Mrs. Bemister, Mrs.Perras, Mrs. White, Mrs. Beauchemin, Mrs. Wiertel, and Mrs. Pachal for their hard work during the evening. Bravo to our Students Leaders who assisted with set-up and activities:  Unity Rodgers, Braydon Lair , Dominic Plamondon, Gabrielle McKenna, Fiona Mac Pherson, Leslie Wilkinson, Kendra Curtis and Duncan Rich.
Our Fall Fundraiser had begun and we are selling gifts from Lamontagne. This year, Lamontagne has raised our profits to 55% in support of our troops. They also donated 480 granolas bars toward our Breakfast for Learning Program. “Thank-You Lamontagne!’’ Our goal, this year is to raise $6000.00 to go toward school field trips. Thank you in advance for all your help and support in reaching our goal for our children. All orders and monies are due Monday October 15th.
A gentle reminder to keep sending in your Moncion receipts over $25.00. Moncion will donate 1% of sales to the school from the receipts. The receipts must be stamped at the time of purchase and be from the Petawawa location. A special thank you to Mrs. White for sorting and counting those receipts.
School Council meetings are open to every parent. We hope to see you at our next meeting on Wednesday, October 10th at 6:00pm. Children are welcome to attend.

Operation Snowsuit
Starting immediately, General Lake will be collecting new and/or gently used snowsuits and footwear on behalf of the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network. Students may bring in clean and in good repair snowsuits and footwear so we may ensure that every child living in our community has appropriate clothing and footwear for our severe Canadian winter. We will be collecting until November 30.

National Bullying Awareness Week: November 12-16

Mark your calendars for an absolutely spectacular week at General Lake with our Anti-bullying Campaign. Students in Grade 7 and 8 classes will lead various initiatives demonstrating the importance of standing up when you see someone being bullied and sending a clear message that bullying hurts. More details to follow.
Together we can Be the Change!

Habit of Mind for October is:
Optimism
If you can imagine it you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.

 RenfrewCounty Child Poverty Action Network

For the past few years CPAN has run a snowsuit and footwear campaign called Operation Snowsuit, the goal of this campaign is to ensure that every child living in our community has appropriate clothing and footwear for our severe Canadian winter.  We are starting the 2012 campaign as the weather is already turning cool and we want to be ready before the cold weather hits.  We are asking for your help to reach this goal.

Your school will be collecting new and/or gently used snowsuits and footwear on behalf of CPAN.  Please take this opportunity to check your closets and donate any snowsuits and/or boots that your child (or children) may have outgrown.  Please note: These must be clean and in good repair as CPAN does not have facilities or the manpower to clean or repair these items.  We are always very short of snow pants and larger snowsuits boots etc. (men’s and ladies sizes) as our youth also enjoy being warm and dry.  New items and/or cash donations are also very gratefully received.

If you or someone you know is in need help please feel free to call, CPAN can be reached at 613-735-2374 ex 250.  Please leave a detailed message.  We will need to know: your name and a phone number where you can be reached, the name of the child in
need including their snowsuit and boot size and gender of your child/children (we wouldn’t want to give a girls snowsuit to a boy and vice-versa).  We have already started taking requests.

Since this program started we have been able to keep hundreds of children warm and dry, we have always been able to fill each and every request.  Last winter we helped 268 children and youth (these included children who had not yet been born, up to 18 year olds).  Any help that you can provide is gratefully appreciated, and I would like to thank you in advance for your time, and for any support you may give very worthy cause.
