Destination Imagination Arrives at General Lake

General Lake Public School is proud to announce that in September, 2012 they will be piloting the Destination Imagination (DI) project.
Students and staff got a sample of the project on Wednesday, June 6 when a representative from DI came to the school to provide interactive activities for students in Grades 3 to 6. The Destination Imagination is an extraordinary non-profit organization providing educational programs for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. The program also encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and service learning. The participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the creative problem-solving process. Participants gain more than just basic knowledge and skills - they learn to unleash their imagination and take unique approaches to problem solving.

Daniel Richter Shares Aboriginal Experiences with General Lake

On June 6, General Lake students were delighted by the unique storytelling and legend performance by aboriginal artist, Daniel Richter.  He presented two distinct shows catering to the different audiences and age groups. The first performance was to the primary students complete with legends of animals and audience participation.  The second show was for our junior intermediate audience for an extended 90 minutes complete with lessons about mother earth, entertaining anecdotes about his people and inspiring stories about his Abénakis roots. Daniel shares the richness of Native history through his funny, often surprising and always entertaining stories.  Special thanks to the School Council for supporting the school in providing this educational experience.

CLASS TRIPS: MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AT GENERAL LAKE

Class Trips:  Most memorable Experience at General Lake
When you ask students at General Lake Public School to recount their favourite memories of the year, class trips are often considered one of the most significant events.  Students at General Lake had a range of class trips this year ranging from local trips to Hugli's farm and Dundonald Hall swimming pool to more distant trips like the Children's Festival in Ottawa, Pirate Adventure in Mooney's Bay, Bonnechere Park, and Carleton University Athletic Experience. Special thanks to our teachers for organizing these wonderful educational events.  Thanks to the parents for volunteering to help on these trips as well as covering the monetary cost.  Finally special thanks to the School Council for recognizing the value of these opportunities and covering the cost of the bus travel.  Together we make valuable learning experiences happen for our students.

General Lake Shows a Positive Attitude at Softball Tournament

Last Wednesday General Lake played in the Grade 7 ball tournament at Riverside Park.  Despite some setbacks at the start of the day everyone played well and had positive attitudes.  David Caron did an amazing job playing second base.  He stopped every ball that came his way and even got a double play by catching a pop fly and tagging the runner.  Fiona MacPherson had no fear! She played her pitcher position strategically....she always knew where the play was and stopped all balls that came her way.  Jada McInnis made a great short stop -playing smart by covering third and second base.  Kyle Lambert got his workout that day playing pitcher and catcher.  He was on fire, catching every foul ball that came his way.  Liam Jobe played first base.  He was quick on his feet catching the pop flies his way.  Leslie Wilkinson played third base.  She did a wonderful job getting in front of all the third base line hits.  Kyle Rice played an amazing center fielder. He got the runners out at second base.  Ayana Stafford played a smart left field-stopping balls her way and covering third base.  Finally Connor Chalmers-Wein played right field-always getting the ball in quickly with his powerful throw.  Big congrats to the whole team for such a great tournament!  Special thanks to Mrs. Graham and Mrs Calver for all their hard work training the team.  Go General Lake Go!!!

Fun, Fun, Fun

A huge thank you to Mme Claudia Major and the School Council for another awesome General Lake event yesterday, Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Even with the sweltering heat, our community came out in droves to celebrate our great school and the achievement of our wonderful students. The main message of the the evening was have fun, fun and even more fun.  The school grounds were transformed into a gigantic party as the air was filled with sounds of popular music.   People danced their way through the various free-flow activities, stopping long enough to laugh with friends.  Among the  popular activities students and staff alike were seen completing the kiddie commando course, facepainting, balloon creations, bubbles, basketball shots, potato sack race, water balloons, water play, and hockey shots.  It was definitely an event not to be missed and one that we hope will continue in the new school year as staff, and parents are already planning next years festivities.  A special thank-you to our Parent volunteers Ms Sykora, Mr Gingras, Mr. and Mrs. Bemister, Mrs Perras, Mrs Alexander, Mrs Lavoie, and Mrs White for all their help running and setting up the evening.  Thanks to our troops for providing the Kiddie Commando Course.  Thanks to our staff Mme Yakabuskie, Mrs. Graham, Mrs Blaedow, Mme Rattray, Mrs Robillard, and Mme DeAbreu for helping run the activities.  Thanks to our student leaders Alex, Jeris, Melora, Sarah, Katie, Sydney, Abby, Leslie, Emily, Connor, Remi, Cassy, Fiona, Bobby, Jenna, Sky, Matt, and Dominic for all their assistance adding to the fun factor. What a great way to connect with all our family, friends and our wonderful General Lake community.  Thank you parents once again for your tremendous support.

June 18 Sunday Night Message

GOOD EVENING.  DEB LEGAULT HERE WITH A SUNDAY NIGHT UPDATE OF THIS WEEKS ACTIVITIES AT GENERAL LAKE PUBLIC SCHOOL.

We will be having a lockdown drill on Monday June 18 just before first recess.  This is just a practice.  We are required to have 2 lock down drills each year.

A reminder that General Lake does have a dress code and this is enforced with the junior intermediate students.  Please ensure that all shorts are respectful coming above the knee to the tips of the fingers when arms are extended down beside body.  Also remember the straps of the shirts should be 3 fingers wide and shirts should again be respectful and cover appropriately.  Hats are to be removed in the school.

Also, as many already know, I am very pleased to announce that General Lake will be having full time every day Kindergarten for the 2012 -2013 school year.  We are currently taking registrations right now.  Speak to Shirley at the front desk for more information.

Its another exciting week at General Lake beginning on Tuesday, June 19, the school Council will host a lunch for all the students that have volunteered their time over this past year delivering pizza, kindergarten duty, yard patrol, A-team and various other activities.  Thank you School Council for helping us recognize the important work of our students

On Wednesday, June 20 we will have our last character assembly at 1:00 pm. We will also recognize those students involved in the Caribou Math Competitions.

From 4:30 - 6:30 we would like to see all of our families join us for an after school fun celebration.  The School Council has been working hard to get an exciting list of activities together.  Staff, volunteer parents and  grade 7/8 students will be leading the great activities which includes bubbles, dancing, face painting, balloon creations, the kiddie commando course, and much more.  It is  sure to be another wonderful General Lake event...I know my own kids are all excited to go.

Finally on Friday June 22 at 12:05 we will hold our Talent Show.  Students from Grade 7/8, Mrs Hiltz and myself have been hard at work preparing what is sure to be a really big show.  Parents, as always, are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Then at 2:40 that same day it will be the staff versus the Grade 8 students on the field for a friendly game of softball.  I am sure staff has been practising all weekend long in anticipation for this big match, which is sure to be a nail biter.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we'll see you this week.
