Dear Parents / Guardians
The Parent Council is interested in getting your feedback regarding proposed French Language initiatives. First, we are interested in providing a Free School French Club for all students for grades 1-8. It would take place every Wednesday evening from 3:40 until 5:00 pm. Parents would be responsible for picking up their children promptly at 5:00pm. Also, as a second suggestion, we would like to provide for all students a once a month Free after School French movie on Friday from 3:40 until 5:30 pm. Attend start date would be the third week of February 2012.
Please complete the following survey regarding these initiatives and return it with your child.

Yes  No 
2. Would your child attend a French Language movie once a month on Friday from 3:40 pm until 5:30 pm

3. What type of activities would you like to see in the after school French Club?

It was a Super event filled with fun, fantasy and fantastic food on January 27 to mark Family Literacy day at General Lake. Information on child online safety

The Internet, mobile phones and other digital media provide children and young people with many educational and social benefits - and also with risks. For most children, online activity does not lead to harm. But the increased risk of sexual abuse, exploitation and other forms of harm in both online and offline settings demands a coordinated response by governments, parents, professionals, business and young themselves.
UNICEF's report, Child Safety Online: Global Challenges and Strategies, reviews global evidence and practice, and answers questions "What are the risks to children online?" and "what are the most effective responses to make them safer?" The report exposes myths and provides evidence to equip policymakers, professionals, families and business to respond. The website (excellent tips/strategies/links) can be found at:
http://www.unicef.ca/en/article/child-safety-online-global-challenges-and-strategies
As we increasingly move beyond classroom borders with our curriculum delivery, we will correspondingly be obliged to educate our students about being a safe online presence.

Mrs. Grant Fondly Remembered at Memorial Service

On January 20, 2012 students, staff, former students, and parents were on hand at General Lake Public School to pay tribute to their former teacher, the late Mrs Barbara Grant. Mrs. Grant passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, December 22, 2012. Her husband, Mr. John Grant, was in attendance, as students solemnly and lovingly remembered their teacher and the impact she had on the school. Mrs. Grant's artistic nature, her love for learning, and her compassion for all students was a central theme in all the student's remembrance speeches. Mr. Grant eloquently spoke to the students with an inspirational and encouraging message to 'Never Give Up'. As part of the Service, students collected non perishable food items and a monetary collection to be donated to St. Joseph's Food Bank in honour of Mrs. Grant.

January CARIBOU MATH RESULTS

Once again, General Lake students took part in the Caribou Math Competition put on by Brock University on Wednesday January 18. Although the buses were cancelled many students did manage to make it to school to take the test. Congratulations to the following students who placed in the top three for our school: In the Grade 3/4 division: Connor Stencil (1st), Nikko Easter (2nd), and MacKenzie Smith (3rd). In the 5/6 division: Jenna Gaumond (1st), Emily Luck (2nd) and Xavier Neegan (3rd). Because of the bus cancellations, Brock University proposes to count the best 5 of the 6 contests every student could attend. You are welcome to submit your comments at caribou@brocku.ca. They will announce this change before the February contest if no serious objections are raised.

You can view more detailed results at http://www.brocku.ca/caribou/contacts/contest_school_results.php

Help For Parents with CHildren in French Immersion

Help for parents with children in French Immersion.
In September 2011, Rainbow DSB launched the Website FSL Homework Toolbox. This site supports parents who have children in a “French Immersion” (FI) program and wish to assist them with homework in French. It is also a resource for FI students who require an accessible user friendly reference tool to help with homework. Learners and educators in other FSL programs will also find it helpful. December 23, 2011

December 23, 2011
Dear Parents, As many of you know, our school has experienced a true loss. The death yesterday of Mrs. Barbara Grant, who taught French and Arts, was indeed a shock. We are deeply saddened and she will be missed by all. Your child has had the opportunity to talk with school counselors today about some of their feelings and concerns. You may expect that your child will want to talk to you about his or her feelings as well. Talking is healthy and will help your child deal with this tragic event. Please advise me of any questions or concerns. Funeral services for Mrs. Grant will be at Neville’s Funeral Home. Details will be posted on our school blog: www.generallakenews.blogspot.com Family is accepting flowers, although donation to local food bank is preferred. Sincerely, Lizanne Lacelle Principal
